Yasopp had abandoned Usopp and his mother to go to sea when Usopp was still very young, calling it "the pirate flag's summons." For the sake of freedom, he had made Usopp endure an utterly miserable childhood, leaving him timid and cowardly.
Yet Usopp had never resented his father for it. On the contrary, he deeply admired Yasopp and yearned for his father's brave, free spirit.
Seeing his father again after more than a decade, Usopp was incredibly excited, repeatedly calling out, "Dad!" Yasopp heard him, but he had no attention to spare for him. The glance Oak swept over him made him feel as though some monstrous beast had fixed its eyes on him. It was extremely dangerous!
"There's no need to take your grudge with Vice Admiral Garp out on Luffy, is there? He's still just a child!"
With a tense expression, Yasopp answered Oak's question.
Unexpectedly, Oak merely curled his lips when he heard that.
"A child?"
Oak kicked Luffy beneath his feet and sneered.
"What kind of child goes out to sea to become a pirate?"
"Since he chose to go to sea, he had to bear the consequences that came with it. If he died, he had no one else to blame.
"If you expect me to spare him just because you say he's still a child, then why the hell did he go to sea?
"What, are pirates these days all such a joke? Do they really think going to sea to be pirates is some child's game?"
As he spoke, Oak stomped down hard, driving Luffy's rubber head into the ground.
With a bang, a deep crater appeared in the earth, burying that straw-hatted head. He truly looked down on pirates like Luffy, who treated going to sea as some adventure game.
