Birthday Party

Mavis kicked aside a skull on the ground, her cheeks puffing up.

"Did my dad say something to you again? Are you still afraid of my dad?"

Yake let out a string of coughs. "Mavis, this isn't about being afraid of your dad. It's just... we're not from the same world, understand? And I already have a girlfriend—five wives, even. So, sorry, I think we'd be better off as friends."

"Besides, we've only actually known each other for a few days, haven't we?"

Mavis bit Yake's hand in a huff, then turned into a little bat and fled. Fortunately, Yake had held back, or he might have shattered her fangs.

Yake checked the time. It was already four o'clock, about time to sleep. For the monsters, the day had only just begun, but Peter and May couldn't manage that. After heading outside, Yake found Peter still playing like crazy. Ignoring Peter's shouts, he grabbed him by the ear and dragged him back to the guest room.

"Peter, get to sleep properly!"

After closing the door, Yake told the head on the doorknob, "Don't you dare let him get out, or I'll beat your face black and blue!"

After yawning, Yake returned to his room and carefully pushed open the door. May was already asleep. Yake gently tucked the blanket around her, then slipped in himself.

A little bat at the window silently watched it all. Only after the room's lights went out did it flap its wings and leave.
