Background

Lucci was trained at the Cipher Pol facility on Guan Hao Island, where he stood apart from the other trainees through his discipline and exceptional talent. He continued training alone at night with his white pigeon, Hattori, after the other children had returned to their dormitories. Even the chief instructor handled him cautiously due to his potential. 31 32

When Dawn infiltrated and destroyed the facility, Lucci witnessed the instructors’ defeat and was offered a place under Dawn. He rejected the offer until he could test Dawn’s strength himself, but was decisively defeated and taken from the island unconscious. 33

After witnessing Dawn kill CP0 agent Joseph and unleash a technique resembling Rokuogan, Lucci accepted Dawn’s demand for service. His allegiance remains conditional: he openly intends to kill Dawn and replace him if Dawn ever becomes weaker. 37 38

Lucci’s principal flaw is his bloodlust. During his first independent raid, he massacred everyone aboard a slave-catching ship—including the captives—while neglecting the actual objective of securing supplies. Dawn gave him a score of zero and resolved to correct his lack of discipline. 41

Cipher Pol Training Base

Lucci was present when Dawn trapped the Guan Hao Island instructors and trainees within a prison of darkness. Initially dismissing Dawn as helpless, he witnessed the intruder evade the instructors’ coordinated assault and kill them. 32

After Dawn killed the chief instructor, Lucci refused recruitment without a fight. His Finger Pistol attacks proved ineffective against Dawn, who broke his fingers, restrained him, and rendered him unconscious with Dark Hell Paradise Drop. 33

Forced Recruitment

Lucci remained imprisoned aboard Dawn’s airborne ship alongside Kaku and Kalifa while Dawn fought Joseph. Observing Dawn’s Tiger Radiance Fist, he concluded that Dawn had surpassed him in the principles behind Rokuogan. 37

Following the destruction of the training island, Lucci chose to serve Dawn rather than die, but framed his acceptance as a challenge for leadership rather than loyalty. 38

Slave Ship Raid

Dawn assigned Lucci his first independent raiding mission against a disguised slave-catching vessel. Lucci used Soru, Geppo, and Shigan to kill Captain Isaac, the crew, and every other person aboard, but ignored the Devil Fruit and supplies that were the mission’s real target. 41

Dawn criticized his failure to prioritize the objective, giving him a zero score. Lucci did not verbally admit fault, but returned to the ship’s cabin to collect valuables. 41
