It wasn't that she was ordering an elderly woman around; she truly had no strength left in her body right now.
Although Grandma Qiao was over sixty, she was in excellent health. This sort of work was no challenge for her at all. "Ah, all right, all right. Do you want to go back and lie down for a while? I can handle this alone."
"No need. I'm just a little tired. I'll be fine sitting for a bit."
Xu Han sat on the curb, burying her head in the crook of her arms as she caught her breath. Her entire body ached terribly, and it felt as though something was lodged in her throat. She couldn't cough anything up, making her feel especially miserable.
"Hey, Uncle, I think that's Aunt Qiao."
As Xu Han drifted in and out of consciousness, she heard someone speaking. Then someone gently shook her, and a man's cool voice came from beside her ear. "Qiao Wanqing? Are you feeling unwell?"
Xu Han lifted her head from her arms. Before her stood a pair of long legs. Looking upward, she saw Gu Yanqing's handsome face. As her gaze lagged half a beat behind, Gu Yanqing crouched down. Seeing the sweat on her face, he instinctively reached out and touched her forehead.
"No fever. Where do you feel unwell?"
"Why is it you again?" Xu Han was baffled. Hadn't Gu Yanqing just left the day before yesterday? Why was he here again today?
Wasn't he coming a little too often? Before, he used to come once every other month, or even every few months.
"Auntie, we didn't go back. We stayed at a hotel," Yuan Yuan said, poking his adorable little head forward.
Xu Han forced a smile at him.
Gu Yanqing said, "You're sick. I'll take you to the hospital."
"It's nothing, just a little cold." Xu Han stood up with a hand to her forehead. "When I deliver the vegetables to Town later, I'll pick up some medicine. That'll be okay."
Gu Yanqing looked at the little electric scooter parked nearby and guessed that Xu Han planned to use it to haul all these vegetables into Town. It was already past three. By the time they finished packing and loading everything, it would be at least four-thirty. There would still be a trace of warmth from the sun on the way there, but on the way back, there would be nothing but freezing wind.
At that thought, Gu Yanqing's face darkened. "You're sick like this, and you still want to deliver vegetables? Are you trying to get yourself killed?"
Xu Han genuinely didn't think she was seriously ill. Weren't colds always like this? Did people really take leave from work over a cold?
"I'm really fine." As she spoke, Xu Han picked up a sack from nearby and began stuffing cabbages into it.
"Auntie, I'll help you." Yuan Yuan diligently carried over the cabbages that were farther away and placed them by Xu Han's side.
Gu Yanqing watched her pack for a while with a cold expression. Finally, seeing that she would not stop until everything was done, he gave in and crouched down to help pack the vegetables.
Xu Han was immediately flattered. "No need to trouble President Gu. I can do it myself."
Gu Yanqing ignored her with a cold face.
Uh... fine. She would just treat him as... free labor. Xu Han awkwardly consoled herself, unable to understand why President Gu wasn't off living the pampered life of Young Master Gu, surrounded by admirers, instead coming to this little mountain village to do manual labor.
Probably because of Koukou, Xu Han thought.
As he packed, Gu Yanqing said expressionlessly, "Don't work yourself so hard. Hire someone to help."
Xu Han didn't have the energy to argue with him right now. "Okay."
"..."
When most of the vegetables on the ground had been packed away, Yellow Immortal suddenly ran down from the house and circled Xu Han's feet several times. Xu Han gave him a rub and said, "Koukou's awake. I'll go back first."
--Usually, when Koukou was sleeping and both Xu Han and Grandma Qiao had gone out to work, Yellow Immortal would stay home to watch over Koukou. When Koukou woke up, Yellow Immortal would come find Xu Han.
Grandma Qiao had discovered this ability. The last time Xu Han went to deliver vegetables and Grandma Qiao was working in the vegetable field, Yellow Immortal suddenly came over, bit Grandma Qiao's pant leg, and dragged her back. When they returned, Grandma Qiao discovered that Koukou, who normally slept three or four hours in the afternoon, had woken up in less than half an hour that day.
After testing it several times, Xu Han found that he really did have this ability. Whenever they were busy, she had Yellow Immortal watch over sleeping Koukou.
Xu Han returned home, washed her hands, put on a mask, and changed into a clean jacket before she dared pick Koukou up. Children had weak immune systems. If she passed her cold on to him, it would be a huge problem.
Perhaps because Xu Han had bundled herself up too thoroughly, Koukou didn't recognize her at first. When she came over to pick him up, he didn't eagerly lift his arms as he normally did. He even shrank back a little when Xu Han held him.
Xu Han had worn a mask at the airport last time too, but she had put it on in front of Koukou. Back then, the little guy had curiously reached out to tug at her mask. This time, less than a month had passed, yet he had already forgotten. Instinctively, he was frightened by this strange outfit.
"Koukou, it's Mommy." Xu Han was glad her voice hadn't gone hoarse yet.
Hearing Xu Han's voice, Koukou first tilted his head curiously. Then, as though he had confirmed something, his face broke into a smile. He spread his arms and babbled for her to pick him up.
Xu Han smiled and picked him up.
Koukou had already slept for more than three hours. The first thing he wanted upon seeing his mother was milk. Xu Han fed him, changed him into a fresh diaper, and was putting his pants on when she heard Gu Yanqing call from outside, "Qiao Wanqing."
Koukou still remembered Gu Yanqing's voice, and hearing it made him very happy.
Blood ties really were a wondrous thing. Aunt Li was also very good to Koukou. She often came over to hold him and would occasionally take him out to play, yet Koukou was never this excited when he heard her voice.
Xu Han couldn't help patting his little bottom. "Do you like your dad that much?"
Koukou echoed her sounds. "Bababa."
"You little smartie." Xu Han pinched his nose, pulled on his pants, and carried him outside.
When Koukou saw Gu Yanqing, he happily asked to be held as usual. Gu Yanqing took him, teased him for a moment, then said to Xu Han, "The vegetables are already loaded into my car. Go change your clothes. We're going to Town together to see a doctor."
