- Clan disciples undergo a preliminary assessment before the annual coming-of-age ceremony. Anyone below the Seventh Duan of Dou Qi loses the right to attend the ceremony and is assigned to a clan business instead 10.

- Eligible participants may be challenged by weaker disciples; victory transfers access to the clan’s Dou Qi Pavilion from the loser to the winner 13.
History
Internal Decline and the Broken Engagement
Before Xiao Yan’s recovery, his three-year cultivation decline weakened Xiao Zhan’s position within the clan. Several elders and younger disciples treated Xiao Yan with indifference or open mockery, expecting his failure to further undermine the clan head 3 10.
The Misty Cloud Sect’s visit to annul Xiao Yan’s engagement to Nalan Yanran became a public insult to both Xiao Yan and the clan. Xiao Zhan nearly fought Ge Ye after the announcement, while the elders’ reactions revealed their political hostility toward him 3. Xiao Yan publicly condemned the manner of the annulment, accepted Nalan Yanran’s Three-Year Agreement, and pledged to erase the humiliation suffered by his father 4.
Return of Xiao Yan
Xiao Yan’s rapid recovery changed the clan’s expectations. He passed the preliminary assessment at the Seventh Duan of Dou Qi after having been considered unable to advance from the Third Duan 10. He then defeated Xiao Ke, the strongest Sixth-Stage challenger, confirming that his renewed cultivation was not superficial 11.
At the coming-of-age ceremony, Xiao Yan tested at the Eighth Duan of Dou Qi—an advancement of five stages within a year. Visiting guests viewed his return as a sign that the clan could rise substantially in the future, while Ya Fei began reconsidering the value of closer ties with the Xiao Clan 12. Xiao Yan subsequently defeated Xiao Ning despite Xiao Ning’s use of Qi Increasing Powder and a sneak attack 13.
Commercial Conflict with the Jia Lie Clan
The Jia Lie Clan hired an alchemist to produce Rejuvenation Powder, drawing merchants and customers away from the Xiao Clan’s market district and threatening its commission-based income 16 18. The elders considered assassinating the opposing alchemist but recognized that doing so risked retaliation from the Alchemist Association 18.
Yao Lao, acting through a black-robed alchemist persona, offered the clan Blood Coagulation Powder: a superior healing medicine priced at thirty gold coins per bottle under a fifty-fifty profit arrangement. He explained his support by claiming to have accepted Xiao Yan as his disciple 18.
Blood Coagulation Powder captured more than half of Wu Tan City’s healing-medicine market and restored the Xiao Family Marketplace’s prosperity 19. After the Mittel Auction House stopped supplying the Jia Lie Clan with medicinal ingredients, and Liu Xi was killed, the Jia Lie Clan’s commercial position collapsed 19 20.
Before leaving Wu Tan City, Xiao Yan refined large quantities of first- and second-grade pills to sustain the clan’s marketplace for approximately a year 20.
