Background

Ji Yuan transmigrated from modern-day Blue Star into the body of a young cultivator sharing his name on Cangluo Continent. The original Ji Yuan was born with Metal, Wood, Water, and Fire Four-Spirit Roots, classified as False Spiritual Roots, and had previously been rejected by the Water Dragon Sect. 3 44

His parents were rogue cultivator “fishers” who caught spirit fish for the Water Dragon Sect. They died after confronting a mid-stage first-rank spirit fish, leaving Ji Yuan impoverished and alone in Zengtou Market. 1 His father, Ji Qingyun, was later revealed to have been murdered after Huang Laotou sold his location to Lousy Liu. 7 16

At the beginning of his new life, Ji Yuan owed three low-grade Spirit Stones in residence fees and possessed only one remaining Spirit Stone. He spent it on upgrading his fish pond instead of borrowing from an exploitative lender, awakening the potential of his Building Upgrade Panel when the pond evolved a Seven-Star Bass into a valuable Coldblood Bass. 1

Ji Yuan later enters the Water Dragon Sect through its selection examination after demonstrating overwhelming Late Qi Refining combat ability. Although he initially avoids sect obligations, his Foundation Establishment success draws Hua Yaoyue’s attention, and she formally accepts him as her direct disciple. 111 152 153

His later travels require numerous identities and disguises. His most notable aliases include Qiu Qianhai, Li Changshou, Xu Beimu, Hu Beizhi, Feng Jiuxiao, and Long Chuan. The names “Old Devil Ji” and “Old Devil Qiu” spread across multiple continents through a mixture of deliberate deception, Qiu Qianhai’s actions, and the exploits of an apparently identical cultivator. 153 326 345 346 703

Appearance

Body tempering substantially changes Ji Yuan’s appearance. Once weathered by fishing work, he develops smoother, paler skin and a more refined bearing that makes him resemble a young noble cultivator rather than a marsh fisherman. 12

  • Noted for being unusually handsome among Zengtou City’s fishers. 18 22
  • Has a cleaner, more spirited aura after abandoning regular fishing and improving his physique. 18
  • Can alter his appearance into a stubbled, mature-looking man when traveling through Cloud-Rain Marsh. 34
  • Uses Form-Changing Talismans, masks, Breath-Concealing Formula, and bloodline disguises to conceal both his appearance and cultivation from powerful cultivators. 154 234 694
  • His Golden Body Mystic Bone physique can turn bronze-gold and gives him the outward durability of a living metal statue. 281 455
  • The Spirit-Devouring Armor formed from the Bee Queen and more than thirteen thousand Spirit-Devouring Bees conceals his aura while greatly augmenting his physical defenses. 326

Personality

Ji Yuan is cautious, pragmatic, and intensely self-reliant. He repeatedly rejects dangerous opportunities—including the conflict over Maple Leaf Island and premature revenge against Lousy Liu—in favor of controlled cultivation, infrastructure, and dependable income. 7 8 20

He guards the secrets of his estate and abilities closely, avoids accepting favors that could create obligations, and generally refuses to meddle in other people’s choices. 18 22 However, his restraint does not make him indifferent. He pays Lin Hu’s overdue residence fee, supports Qiu Qianhai before his departure, worries over Lu Wan’s safety, and searches for Qiu after finding his signal seashell. 17 26 46 50

In combat, Ji Yuan has become decisive and lethal toward those who attempt to kill him. Though initially sickened by taking lives, he learns to anticipate betrayal, eliminate threats quickly, and erase evidence afterward. 16 27 36

His growing power does not erase his survival instincts. He habitually conceals cultivation breakthroughs, inventories enemy Storage Bags through intermediaries to avoid tracking techniques, and prefers aliases, formations, ambushes, and escape routes over public confrontations. 134 154 220 467

Ji Yuan’s compassion remains selective but genuine. He risks himself for Qiu Qianhai, assists Wen Lin’s family, protects civilians during the Linhua City attack, and repeatedly aids friends despite complaining about the trouble involved. 83 104 172 375 However, he has also become increasingly willing to control dangerous subordinates through Daoheart Demonseeds, including Hu Li, You Ji, and Mei Zhuang, revealing a morally ambiguous pragmatism shaped by the cultivation world. 455 495 703

Abilities & Skills

Building Upgrade Panel

Ji Yuan’s transmigration advantage is a panel that recognizes named structures and upgrades them after their material and cultivation requirements are met. Upgraded buildings produce spiritual resources, improve his training, or grant supernatural functions. 1 21 41

Structure Documented upgrades and effects
Fish Pond Level 1 increases fry growth by 20% and gives Half-Spirit Fish a chance to evolve into Spirit Fish. A future level can produce Waterglow Dew. 1 At Level 4, it gains Flood-Dragon Transformation potential and later supports the growth of multiple Ice Flood Dragons and Chi Dragons. 242 349 455
Chicken Coop Level 1 produces Spirit Eggs and can eventually produce Spirit Soil or control spirit birds. Level 2 gives chickens spirit-patterned claws, produces one qian of Spirit Soil daily, briefly controls spirit fowl, and can conceal its anomalous appearance. 3 29
Cave Abode / Dwelling Level 1 repairs itself, wards dust, and increases nighttime spiritual-energy concentration by 20%. Level 2 grants a 10% spiritual-energy boost day and night plus basic soundproofing. 18 19 Later upgrades grant Stillness barriers, improved cultivation conditions, aptitude improvement through Defy Heaven, Change Fate, and the ability to extend a Teleportation Formation. 81 357 663
Talisman Room Level 1 improves Ji Yuan’s success rate when crafting first- and second-rank talismans. 21 23 Its functions are later incorporated into the Heavenly Craft Workshop. 211 354
Pigsty Level 2 becomes self-cleaning and produces Blood Essence. Its next level would yield Jade-Grease and guarantee an Aperture-Tempering Pearl when a Spirit Pig is slaughtered. 38 39 At Level 4, its advancement allows Ji Yuan to comprehend the Ninefold Profound Yang body-cultivation technique. 258 259
Dao Comprehension Chamber Level 1 increases comprehension by 10%; Level 2 raises this to 20% and adds a 10% bonus against bottlenecks. 41 Level 3 produces Clear-Mind Fruits and substantially enhances comprehension during major cultivation breakthroughs. 416
Formation Room Can be activated within a portable cave abode, allowing Ji Yuan to deploy the Star-Spiral Cloud Barrier Formation and Stardust Illusion-Killing Formation across an enclosed area. 158
Alchemy Room Improves refinement success and eventually produces a Two-Pattern Foundation Establishment Pill every six months. 139
Meditation Room Strengthens the divine soul and divine sense. Its Level 1 effect grants Qi Refining cultivators divine sense, while later upgrades raise Ji Yuan’s divine sense toward Nascent Soul levels. 139 143 416
Scripture Pavilion Displays measurable proficiency for cultivation techniques, spells, alchemy, formations, talismans, and artifact refinement. Higher levels substantially accelerate proficiency growth and eventually support the creation of personal cultivation techniques. 269 287 488
Heavenly Grotto Golden Core Realm core building and Life-bound Dharma Treasure capable of containing other buildings once supplied with Voidspace Stone. 289
Heavenly Craft Workshop The synthesis of the Alchemy Room, Formation Room, Talisman Chamber, and Artifact Refining Room. It improves the four auxiliary arts, produces high-level cultivation resources, and supports the forging of the Azure Waves Sword Formation. 211 353 354
Sword Forge Improves Ji Yuan’s sword-cultivation comprehension, strengthens the Sword Qi within his spiritual energy, and deepens his connection to the nine Azure Waves Swords. 300
Star-Gazing Tower Protects him from lower-realm divination and can be upgraded to investigate distant people, locations, and hidden threats. 472

Water Techniques

Ji Yuan specializes in water-aspected techniques and develops exceptional control over them.

  • Water Arrow Technique — His primary early offensive spell; he reaches great mastery and later casts it instantly. 4 8
    • By the Nascent Soul era, it is unexpectedly his most advanced basic spell, with proficiency of 87/100. 287
  • Water Shield — A basic defensive technique learned while cultivating at home. 5
  • Water Drop Finger — A piercing technique capable of killing cultivators and Yin Ghosts; Ji Yuan can cast it repeatedly without the backlash suffered by Ghost Island Master. 16 36
    • Stone-Piercing — Second layer; concentrates repeated attacks on a single point to penetrate armor, artifacts, and defensive spells. 40 41
    • Explosive Charge — Third layer; a water-blade area attack requiring Late Qi Refining and substantial spiritual energy. 40 104
  • Water Dragon Technique — A later water-aspected technique used alongside dragon breath, sword attacks, talismans, and formations in Foundation Establishment combat. 171

Object Manipulation Art

Ji Yuan acquires the Object Manipulation Technique from Wu Laochuan’s spoils and practices until magical artifacts move as naturally as extensions of his body. 16 19

  • Conceals the Deathbringer Needle within his Waterdrop Ring for surprise attacks. 19
  • Uses the Blackgold Blade as a visible feint while directing the needle toward a concealed target. 19 27
  • His precision and artifact coordination allow him to defeat higher-cultivation ambushers. 27
  • His later divine sense allows increasingly complex remote control of flying swords, formations, Spirit Artifacts, and even manifested sword-light. 419

Talisman Crafting

Ji Yuan chooses talisman crafting because of its comparatively low entry cost and usefulness to his estate upgrades. 21

  • Learns the correct method for activating talismans from Wu Yan: spiritual energy must be applied by hand rather than concentrated through the talisman brush. 23
  • Achieves an estimated 20–30% success rate as a beginner and sells thirty-two Water-Repelling Talismans for sixty Spirit Stones. 25
  • Breaks into Middle-Grade Talisman mastery and successfully draws a Golden Body Talisman. 41
  • Draws the obscure Skylight Talisman successfully on his first attempt during the Water Dragon Sect examination, then deliberately fails later attempts to avoid immediate recruitment. 46
  • Becomes a Second Tier talisman master after drawing the Bronze Wall Talisman and learning Second Tier Thousand Swords Talismans. 136
  • Later develops complete Five-Element talisman arts and incorporates talisman-making into the Heavenly Craft Workshop’s four-art system. 136 211

Alchemy and Artifact Refinement

Ji Yuan begins studying alchemy to meet the Pigsty’s upgrade requirements and to secure his future Foundation Establishment resources. 39

  • Becomes a Middle First-Tier Alchemist after refining his first middle-grade Cultivation Pill in the Dao Comprehension Chamber. 92
  • Advances to Second Tier alchemy and achieves exceptional Foundation Establishment Pill yields for Han Feiyu, Du Wanyi, and himself. 166
  • Learns artifact refinement from the Iron Hammer Island Lord and successfully creates magical-artifact cave abodes after ten days of instruction. 158
  • Learns the Martial Lament Hammer Technique from Ran Kui and develops into a high-level artifact refiner. 234 300
  • Reaches Fourth-Tier artifact-refining mastery with the aid of Clear-Mind Fruits. 488

Surging Waves Sword Art

Xu Fugui gives Ji Yuan the complete Surging Waves Sword Art after recognizing his potential. 40

  • Entangling Waves — Creates pale-blue ripples that slow trapped opponents for approximately one breath. 42
  • Layered Mirror — Intended for confusion, evasion, and escape. 40
  • Ninefold Waves — A stronger offensive technique mastered during secluded cultivation. 136

Azure Billows Nine Tribulations Sword Canon

After Foundation Establishment, Ji Yuan’s main cultivation method becomes the Azure Billows Nine Tribulations Sword Canon, also translated as the Canglan Nine Tribulations Sword Canon. Its spiritual energy carries Sword Qi, and it requires the condensation of nine Sword Embryos during the Foundation Establishment Realm. 152

  • The Sword Embryos can attack independently, form a sword formation within his dantian, and exert tidal gravitational force to restrain enemies. 152 234
  • He condenses Firefly Sword as his fifth Sword Embryo at Mirror Lake and later forms Giant Gate as his eighth flying-sword Sword Embryo at the Fallen Star River estuary. 234 281
  • The completed nine-sword system becomes the foundation of his Azure Waves Sword Formation and is one of his primary killing methods against Golden Core and Nascent Soul opponents. 354 330
  • Heaven-Severing Abyss — A self-created Sword Nine technique that establishes a spatial divide capable of severing spiritual energy, light, sound, and physical connection; even before Spirit Transformation, it can threaten Early Spirit Transformation cultivators. 657

Body Cultivation

Ji Yuan’s body cultivation begins as an auxiliary path but eventually becomes one of his greatest advantages.

  • His early body tempering lets him withstand attacks beyond his cultivation realm and makes the Water Drop Finger especially lethal. 40 134
  • Ninefold Profound Yang Technique — Obtained through the Level 4 Pigsty; develops his blood qi and physical body through extreme pressure, battle, medicinal resources, and repeated reconstruction. 258 281
  • Sinew Tempering Realm — Reached through dangerous cultivation in the Thunderstorm Zone and later advanced to its peak. 427 455
  • Golden Body Mystic Bone Realm — Achieved through Nascent Soul-level thunder tempering in Thunderclap Marsh; his body can survive attacks that would destroy ordinary cultivators of comparable spiritual cultivation. 455
  • Five Viscera Furnace Realm — Develops organ manifestations including the Lung-Metal Flood Dragon, with the final organ still incomplete. 741

Formations and Divine Sense

Ji Yuan’s formation knowledge begins with the repaired Yin Ghost Formation but expands into a major combat specialty.

  • Becomes a Second Tier Formation Master through Yun Qianzai’s instruction and later deploys portable formations to reverse enemy ambushes. 158 174
  • Uses the Star-Spiral Cloud Barrier Formation and Stardust Illusion-Killing Formation to suppress three Foundation Establishment demonic cultivators within their own trap. 171
  • Advances to Third-Order Formation Master after studying a Fourth-Tier inheritance with Divine Spirit Incense. 375
  • His Meditation Room-enhanced divine sense eventually reaches Nascent Soul Middle-Stage quality while he remains below that realm. 419
  • Divine Sense Manifestation — Condenses his consciousness into hundreds of Azure Waves Swords, enabling him to exert overwhelming mental pressure and kill ordinary Golden Core cultivators without direct physical attacks. 419

Yin Ghost Formation

Ji Yuan inherits the incomplete Yin Ghost Formation and Yin Ghost Banner after killing Ghost Island Master. 36 37

  • Initially functions as a bewildering and killing formation but drains Ji Yuan’s own spiritual energy due to Ghost Island Master’s flawed modifications. 38
  • Ji Yuan studies it in the Dao Comprehension Chamber and installs five Spirit Stone slots, completing the formation after two months. 48
  • The repaired first-rank formation is supported by two Fifth-Layer Yin Ghosts and can kill an ordinary Sixth-Layer Qi Refining cultivator without Ji Yuan acting directly. 49
  • Its intense yin aura can cause others to mistake Ji Yuan for a devil-path cultivator. 49
  • The Yin Ghosts later advance to Late Qi Refining and continue strengthening the Yin Ghost Banner. 92
  • Ji Yuan’s Corpse Yin Demonfire is particularly effective against corpses and Yin-aligned enemies; it grows stronger by burning them. 353

Equipment

  • Black Wind Boat — Mid-grade Spirit Vessel captured from Ghost Island Master; significantly faster than Ji Yuan’s former White Boat and capable of underwater travel. 37 38
  • Whitewater Flying Sword — Mid-grade flying sword with superior agility and lower spiritual-energy consumption than the Blackgold Blade. 33 36
  • Blackgold Blade — Direct offensive artifact; can be wielded in close combat or remotely. 17 18
  • Deathbringer Needle / Life-Seizing Needle — A lethal concealed embroidery-needle artifact used as Ji Yuan’s assassination trump card. 18 19
  • Dragon Armor Shield — Basic defensive dharma artifact made from a first-tier Spirit Turtle Shell. 30
  • Yin Ghost Banner — Formation flag housing two Yin Ghosts; serves as both a magical artifact and the core of the Yin Ghost Formation. 38 49
  • Waterdrop Ring — Used to conceal the Deathbringer Needle. 19
  • High-grade Water-Escape Talisman — Used to evade Ghost Island Master’s Golden Seal Talisman. 33 36
  • Demon-Subduing Talisman — Suppresses evil techniques and weakened Ghost Island Master’s defenses. 33 36
  • Thousandfold Chains — Talisman Treasure taken from Jian Zong; can restrain a Foundation Establishment Middle Stage cultivator for a limited time. 134
  • Heavenly Venom Needle — Damaged Dharma Treasure gifted by Ran Kui; a poison needle from a thirty-six-needle set that suits Ji Yuan’s concealed-weapon fighting style. 234
  • Sky-Piercer Flying Boat — Powerful flying boat seized from the Yang Household and retained for emergencies because of its recognizability. 143
  • Purple Lightning and Mirage Light Needle — Peak-grade magical-artifact flying sword and low-grade Spirit Artifact acquired while preparing for stronger enemies. 136
  • Azure Waves Swords — Ji Yuan’s nine Sword Embryo-based flying swords, eventually refined into his core sword-formation system. 281 354
  • Lingtai Square-Inch Mountain — His foremost Life-bound Dharma Treasure and a decisive defensive, suppressive, and spatial asset. 299 351 |
  • Spirit-Devouring Armor — Bee-formed armor that conceals his aura, devours ambient spiritual energy, and dramatically improves his physical defense. 326
  • Heavenly Thunder Pellets — Explosive weapons refined through artifact crafting; dangerous even to Ji Yuan himself during experimentation. 300
  • Soul-Calming Bell — Divine-soul defensive treasure later fused into the Nine-Tower Soul-Calming Bell, a Mid-Grade Heavy Treasure. 346 739

  • Ji Qingyun — Father; a rogue cultivator fisher murdered after Huang Laotou sold his location to Lousy Liu. 7 16
  • Qiu Qianhai — Closest friend and trusted combat companion. Qiu accepts blame for Lousy Liu’s death, while Ji Yuan supplies him for his flight; they vow to destroy the Qin Household together. 17 Qiu later believes Ji Yuan died protecting him and continues using Ji Yuan’s name across the Abyssal Continent in remembrance of him. 83 153

Revenge and the Fall of Lousy Liu

After learning that Lousy Liu possesses his father’s Willow Leaf Boat, Ji Yuan suppresses his desire for revenge until he has sufficient strength. 7

Independent Cultivation and Talisman Growth

Ji Yuan upgrades his Cave Abode and Talisman Room, learns Object Manipulation, and enters talisman crafting as both a source of income and a path toward future upgrades. 18 21 23

The Ghost Island Master Conflict

Seeking Rotbone Flowers for his Pigsty, Ji Yuan becomes entangled with Wei Caishan and Ghost Island Master. He survives the latter’s formation, counters his evil techniques with Red-Crowned Chicken Blood and talismans, and kills him with the Deathbringer Needle and Whitewater Flying Sword. 34 36

The victory grants Ji Yuan the Black Wind Boat, Yin Ghost Banner, Rotbone Flowers, and an incomplete Yin Ghost Sect inheritance. He rejects the inheritance’s cruel methods while adapting its formation for his own use. 37 38 48

Rising Reputation

Ji Yuan develops the Dao Comprehension Chamber, comprehends Stone-Piercing and Entangling Waves, reaches the Sixth Layer of Qi Refining, and becomes capable of challenging stronger cultivators through preparation and formations. 41 42 49

Search for Qiu Qianhai

A seashell left at Ji Yuan’s gate signals Qiu Qianhai’s return, honoring their earlier agreement. Ji Yuan travels to Autumn Rain Island but finds only fresh evidence of a battle. 17 50

Despite Lame Li’s warning that involvement may attract suspicion, Ji Yuan continues seeking information while worrying over Qiu’s fate. 50

Water Dragon Sect Ascension

Ji Yuan reunites with Qiu Qianhai and rescues him from Qin Old Blind Man, apparently dying before Qiu’s eyes during the ensuing conflict. His subsequent cultivation advances rapidly through Late Qi Refining as his reputation and resources grow. 83

He enters the Water Dragon Sect selection, displays strength far above ordinary Qi Refining cultivators, and uses Li Changhe’s Ascension Immortal Token to avoid deployment to the Liancheng Mountain front lines. 111 112

Foundation Establishment and Hua Yaoyue’s Lineage

After reaching Peak Qi Refining, Ji Yuan kills Foundation Establishment cultivators, upgrades the Meditation Room, and secures the resources necessary to form his foundation. 134 142 143

His successful Foundation Establishment overturns assumptions about False Spiritual Roots. Hua Yaoyue formally takes him as a direct disciple, giving him a powerful master, senior siblings, concealment methods, and a place within her lineage. 152 153 154

Golden Core and the Abyssal Continent

Ji Yuan establishes his Golden Core with a Dan Yuan Fruit and begins operating on the Abyssal Continent under the Li Changshou identity. There, he reunites with Liu Yuan, develops ties with Wen Jiu and other rogue cultivators, and strengthens the Heavenly Craft Workshop. 351 352 353

The confusion surrounding an infamous identical “Old Devil Ji” forces him to rely even more heavily on disguises and false identities. He eventually learns that his name and appearance have become feared across continents. 345 346 395

Yin Ghost Sect Secrets and the Old Devil Reputation

Ji Yuan’s discoveries of Skeleton Tokens, black coffins, Yin Ghost Sect artifacts, and ancient records reveal that the Yin Ghost Sect once ruled the Abyssal Continent before vanishing under mysterious circumstances. 278 326 353

While acting as Qiu Qianhai, he builds a fearsome “Old Devil Qiu” reputation through calculated violence, formations, spirit beasts, and misdirection. The legend eventually spreads through Southwater, Shuibei, and Cangluo Continent. 326 345

Nascent Soul and Continental War

Ji Yuan forms a Nascent Soul after years of preparation and becomes a Supreme Elder candidate for the Cloud-Rain Sect under the identity Xu Beimu. He reveals his true name only after confirming that cooperation with the sect may benefit him. 443

On the Demon God Continent, he continues concealing his identity among the Azure Luan, Phoenix, Horned Dragon, and Qilin Clans while gathering the resources needed to pursue Void Refinement. His Divine Soul reaches the peak of Spirit Transformation, his state of mind advances to Clarity, and his body cultivation reaches the Four-Organ Realm. 694 739 741
