This mission had been full of traps from the start. Even the NPCs in the Great Seclusion Temple were part of one.
The Great Seclusion Temple had struck a deal with the Mountain Demon and found four capable, unlucky souls to catch ghosts.
While catching the ghosts, the four were bound to follow this world's rules and burn the plaques. The first plaque was harmless enough; burning it caused no trouble.
By ordinary logic, if nothing happened after the first, they would burn the second. That would release the body sealed inside the main hall.
The female ghost hid in the head, and the male ghost hid in the body. Both were ready to bring the head and body together, then evolve into the Mountain Demon.
Heavenly Retribution would then descend. The Mountain Demon would transfer its share to Nameless and the others. Destroying the plaques already meant they had to bear some of it; added to the Mountain Demon's share, it would certainly kill all four of them.
Of course, a mission could not be certain death.
Nameless looked at Xu Qinqin. "You've figured out how to clear it, haven't you?"
"Think carefully," Xu Qinqin said. "If we'd burned the first plaque right away, how should the rest of the fight have gone?"
Nameless closed his eyes and ran through it in his mind. Then he smiled. "I see."
This stage was difficult, but in another sense, it was fairly easy.
If they had chosen to cooperate from the start, they only had to follow the rules: burn the first plaque, realize the second was a trap, kill the head in the sky before burning the second plaque, then kill the headless body. They could have cleared the stage with ease.
