The main issue was that there were simply too many Howlbeasts.
Nameless found it hard to believe that this grassland could support such a massive pack of Howlbeasts.
Generally speaking, the more predators there were, the more food they needed. The number of predators in every ecosystem was fixed; once there were too many, the ecological balance would inevitably be disrupted.
Once the food was gone, the predators themselves would starve to death.
Yet there were at least three hundred Howlbeasts nearby by rough estimate. Did this grassland really have that much food?
Before Nameless could think any further, the battle had already begun. Several warriors surrounded a Howlbeast at a time. For a while, Howlbeasts were being killed, but warriors were dying as well.
Howlbeasts were far stronger than savages. For a savage to kill one, they had to stab its vital points with a stone spear. Once a Howlbeast bit a savage, that savage could basically be declared dead.
They would shake their heads and cleanly bite through bone.
The warriors suffered terrible casualties. Many savages who rushed forward were simply throwing their lives away, ambushed by Howlbeasts beyond their blind spots before they even had time to attack.
Nameless saw several boys and girls about Xia Hua's age charge forward. They threw stones once and ran, only to be caught by a Howlbeast in the blink of an eye.
The Howlbeast rammed one boy to death, then bit the girl's leg and swiftly dragged her into the darkness. Moments later, only her screams could be heard.
"Don't leave the area lit by the fire. Don't step outside my shadow!" Nameless said to Xia Hua.
Xia Hua immediately nodded to show that she understood, following closely behind Nameless with a stone knife clutched in her sweaty hand.
