Ch. 81The second

Key plot points and events

  • Feng Laixian enters the Great Sun Red Emperor state again and overwhelms Guan Hongying’s group. He burns Li Kuidá to dust, destroys the female Living Corpse, and eliminates Zuo Xiangming’s remaining Living Corpse.
  • Guan Hongying and the woman in black escape using a spatial ability. Feng recognizes the woman’s talent but lets them go, then leaves the sun-powered state to conserve strength for the dangers of the wilderness. He decides Bai De can handle the nearby opponents himself.
  • At the extinct volcano, Su Qingbo gives Zhang Ping a black bear gallbladder as thanks. After repeatedly appraising it, Zhang identifies it as the remnant of a nether-mist creature and swallows it.
  • The gallbladder expands Zhang’s nethermist body: he can now absorb anger as well as fear and convert both into controllable nether mist. He realizes this could provide a valuable new energy source against stronger enemies.

Character developments and interactions

  • Feng Laixian shows overwhelming power and tactical restraint: despite dominating the fight, he prioritizes conserving stamina in the wilderness rather than pursuing every enemy or assisting Bai De.
  • Guan Hongying recognizes she cannot defeat Feng even with her full beast transformation and orders a retreat. The woman in black supports her and reveals a spatial ability.
  • Zuo Xiangming suffers a major loss, with three capable Living Corpses destroyed, and is left powerless before Feng.
  • Zhang Ping confidently trusts his knowledge and abilities, accepting the gallbladder’s risk and gaining a significant upgrade. Su Qingbo worries that the gift may have harmed him, while Ye Changchun criticizes Su’s choice; Zhang reassures them that it helped.
  • Su Qingbo’s instinctive choice proves unusually perceptive, and Zhang’s calm response puts him at ease.

Significant themes

  • Power balanced by prudence: Feng can win the encounter but still conserves energy because the wilderness presents unpredictable threats.
  • Growth through setbacks and adaptation: Zhang’s earlier frustration over dwindling nether mist ultimately leads to a useful new ability.
  • Emotion as power: Fear and anger can both become resources; anger may be especially abundant in battle.
  • Instinct and unexpected fortune: Su’s intuition guides him to a gift that suits Zhang, while apparent misfortune helps create an opportunity.

Ch. 82Treating the Lost State

Key plot points

  • Su Qingbo accepts Zhang Ping’s explanation but prepares to leave. Ye Changchun, reluctant to lose him, prompts Zhang Ping to reveal that he can prevent someone from sinking further into the Lost State.
  • Zhang Ping creates a Contract Gem containing a single command of absolute obedience. After he explains the terms, Ye Changchun swallows it without hesitation.
  • Zhang Ping uses his one command to tell Ye Changchun never to lose himself or deteriorate further. Ye Changchun’s Lost State ends, and his memories and concerns return.
  • Ye Changchun admits he left Mingzhu City after a painful rejection and grew accustomed to wilderness life. Though clearer-minded, he reflects that the Lost State’s ignorance had its comforts, and says he still cares about the city.
  • At Ye Changchun’s urging, Su Qingbo returns. Though wary that Zhang Ping might be manipulating Ye, Su eventually trusts his longtime companion and agrees to try the gem.
  • Su chooses not to escape the Lost State entirely; he wants only to prevent his condition from worsening. However, he repeatedly cannot bring himself to swallow the gem. Little Sairon is relieved that this difficulty is not unique to it.

Character developments

  • Zhang Ping gains his first summoned beast in Ye Changchun, but uses his one command to protect Ye rather than control him for personal gain. He affirms his desire to act honorably.
  • Ye Changchun regains his memories, emotions, and sense of responsibility. He recognizes that recovery brings worries as well as clarity, and begins considering his lingering connection to Mingzhu City.
  • Su Qingbo shows caution but ultimately trusts Ye Changchun. He makes a deliberate choice to preserve his current temperament while preventing further decline.
  • Little Sairon feels reassured after seeing Su struggle with the Contract Gem too.

Significant themes

  • Trust and ethical power: Zhang Ping’s ability could be exploited, but his choice to use it protectively demonstrates his character.
  • The cost of recovery: Leaving the Lost State restores memory and concern, but also removes the comfort of ignorance.
  • Personal choice: Ye and Su respond differently to recovery, while Su is allowed to decide what kind of intervention he wants.
  • Belonging and unresolved attachment: Ye’s reflection on Mingzhu City suggests that past pain has not erased his ties to it.

Character interactions

  • Ye Changchun advocates for Su Qingbo and vouches for Zhang Ping, strengthening Su’s willingness to trust him.
  • Zhang and Ye share a candid, affectionate exchange about Zhang’s command and his temptation to misuse it; Ye’s recovered awareness also leads him to ask Zhang’s name for the first time.
  • Su and Ye’s longstanding bond shapes the scene: Su relies on Ye’s judgment, while Ye encourages him to consider the possibility of help.

Ch. 83A warm heart

Chapter Summary — “A Warm Heart”

Key plot points and events

  • Su Qingbo struggles to swallow a Contract Gem because it disgusts him. Ye Changchun and Zhang Ping encourage him, and Ye reminds him to think of his great-granddaughter.
  • Su swallows the gem but immediately expels it intact. Zhang Ping explains that deep resistance can prevent the gem from taking effect; Su’s pure-water body also cannot digest it.
  • Su returns to human form to try again, revealing that he is extremely old and has remained in his water form partly because his human body is frail. This time, the gem softens in his mouth and takes effect.
  • Zhang Ping commands Su to remain in his current lost state without worsening, recovering, or succumbing. Su hopes the command will protect him, though he feels no immediate change.
  • Little Sairon asks to swallow a Contract Gem after witnessing Su do so. Zhang Ping offers it only three commands, rather than absolute control. Sairon hesitates, then swallows it when it senses Zhang’s warmth and trust.

Character developments

  • Su Qingbo overcomes his revulsion and accepts help, revealing both his advanced age and vulnerability. He remains uncertain about the command’s effect but trusts Zhang.
  • Zhang Ping reconsiders his desire for absolute control over companions. He recognizes that Little Sairon’s willingness comes from trust, not understanding, and chooses to limit his authority.
  • Little Sairon shows courage and devotion, taking a frightening step because it trusts Zhang.
  • Ye Changchun supports Su and reassures him, drawing on his own positive experience of being cured.

Significant themes

  • Trust versus control: Zhang questions whether he can truly rely on companions if he needs absolute commands to guarantee their obedience.
  • Compassion and mutual support: Encouragement helps Su face something he finds unbearable, while Zhang treats his companions with affection rather than merely as assets.
  • Vulnerability and aging: Su’s frail human body contrasts with his water form and underscores the cost of his long life.
  • Courage through connection: Both Su and Little Sairon find resolve through the care and reassurance of others.

Character interactions

  • Ye Changchun and Zhang Ping encourage Su, with Ye’s reminder of Su’s great-granddaughter helping him try again.
  • Zhang patiently explains the gem’s failure and effect, then gives Su reassurance about his ability.
  • Little Sairon seeks Zhang’s attention and signals its wish to eat a gem. Zhang responds gently, limits the number of commands, and lets it proceed at its own pace.
  • The chapter ends on the emotional bond between Zhang and Little Sairon: its trust in his warm, affectionate gaze gives it the courage to swallow the gem.

Ch. 84You'll Be a Great Man

Key plot points and events

  • Zhang Ping leaves the crater carrying Little Sairon, excited but warned by Su Qingbo not to draw dangerous Mutated Beasts with his noise.
  • Su Qingbo and Ye Changchun agree to accompany him and help Mingzhu City. Their decision was strengthened by Zhang Ping’s commands for Little Sairon: to remain reasonably kind, grow up healthy, and resist its bestial nature.
  • Zhang Ping discovers that his Storage Contracts can hold summoned beasts. The contracted elders can enter and leave freely, and the gems can float near him; Zhang himself can hide inside one but cannot move it.
  • Little Sairon chooses to stay in Zhang Ping’s arms, though he is told to retreat into its Storage Contract if danger arises.
  • Exhausted from creating six Contract Gems, Zhang Ping nevertheless continues down the mountain under his own power as training. He plans to seek manageable opponents on the way to meet Feng Laixian’s group and travel to Base 08.

Character developments

  • Zhang Ping shows compassion and restraint: he uses his power to protect and improve Little Sairon rather than control it for personal gain. Praise from the elders touches him because he has rarely received such affirmation. He is also determined to grow stronger so he can protect the city and explore the world.
  • Ye Changchun and Su Qingbo move from observing Zhang Ping to actively trusting and supporting him, seeing his command over Little Sairon as almost miraculous.
  • Little Sairon demonstrates affection and loyalty by preferring Zhang Ping’s company to the comfort of its Storage Contract.

Significant themes

  • Power used responsibly: Zhang Ping’s abilities could serve selfish desires, but he applies them to heal and safeguard others.
  • Nature versus nurture: Mutated Beasts’ adult violence has made them dangerous despite childhood bonds; Zhang’s command offers a possible way to resist that instinct.
  • Trust, care, and responsibility: The elders’ support and Little Sairon’s attachment grow from Zhang Ping’s protective choices.
  • Strength through effort: Zhang Ping accepts hardship and training because survival and his ambitions demand greater strength.

Character interactions

  • Su Qingbo and Ye Changchun warn Zhang Ping about danger, praise his character, and offer their help.
  • Zhang Ping responds modestly to their praise and thanks them, while insisting on training rather than accepting Ye Changchun’s offer of a ride.
  • Zhang Ping and Little Sairon share a tender exchange: the creature chooses to stay close, and Zhang Ping cautions it to seek shelter if danger comes.

Ch. 85A chance encounter

Key plot points and events

  • Zhang Ping and Little Sairon travel through the woods, where they witness a Lightning Thunderbird kill nearby animals with a lightning strike. Zhang explains the danger and they keep their distance.
  • Zhang regrets that the frost-damaged firebird he previously recovered yielded no usable feathers. When a Peril-Bearing Fox tries to use its Conventionality Reversal ability to make him abandon Little Sairon, Zhang kills it and collects its valuable parts.
  • Elsewhere, badly wounded Guan Hongying entrusts her niece, Zhong Xiaoyu, with a warning for Queen Aoxue: Feng Laixian may become a major threat. Xiaoyu is distraught and struggles to understand her aunt’s final instructions.
  • A Corpse-Eating Ape enters their hiding place. Though Guan is near death, she prepares to defend Xiaoyu; Zhang arrives and kills the creature with his scythe.
  • Guan offers Zhang money in gratitude, reflecting the danger and distrust common in the wilderness. Zhang refuses payment, then learns from Xiaoyu that Guan is dying.

Character developments

  • Zhang Ping shows caution around dangerous beasts, confidence in handling threats, and compassion toward strangers. He remains frustrated by his inability to catch the swift firebirds.
  • Little Sairon is frightened by the Thunderbird and seeks reassurance from Zhang, showing its dependence on him.
  • Guan Hongying remains determined to protect Xiaoyu and deliver an important warning despite her fatal wound.
  • Zhong Xiaoyu is overwhelmed by grief and fear, but she is also the one who reveals the seriousness of Guan’s condition to Zhang.

Significant themes

  • The wilderness is dangerous and governed by survival rather than the protections of city life.
  • Strength and vigilance matter, but compassion can still prompt people to help one another.
  • Mutated creatures possess varied and sometimes deceptive abilities, making familiarity and caution essential.
  • Duty and loyalty persist even at the point of death, as shown by Guan’s concern for her queen and niece.

Character interactions

  • Zhang reassures Little Sairon after the Thunderbird’s attack.
  • Zhang kills the Peril-Bearing Fox when it threatens Little Sairon, then gathers materials from its body.
  • Guan urges Xiaoyu to carry her warning to Queen Aoxue; Xiaoyu’s emotional responses frustrate Guan, though their bond is clear.
  • Zhang saves both women from the Corpse-Eating Ape. Guan offers payment, while Zhang declines and checks on her—only to learn that her wound is fatal.

Ch. 86Soy Sauce Girl

Chapter Summary: “Soy Sauce Girl”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Guan Hongying is badly injured by heat toxin from a Corpse-Eating Ape’s attack. Her abdomen has been severely burned, and the toxin is spreading toward her organs and heart.
  • Zhang Ping enters the tree hollow, removes the ape’s head, and offers to treat her. Though wary of him, Guan Hongying agrees after he assures her that he means no harm.
  • Zhang Ping uses his Pure-Blood Form as a healing ability, sending Pure Blood into Guan Hongying’s body to neutralize the heat toxin and repair her internal injuries.
  • The treatment succeeds, but Zhang Ping’s arm is partially consumed in the process. He restores it by transforming it into water and replenishing it with mineral water from his Golden Treasury.
  • Zhong Xiaoyu admires Zhang Ping’s healing ability and the sense of security he gives her. Zhang Ping uses Appraisal Technique on her and discovers that her powerful Spatial Transfer ability has developed an unusual advanced skill: “Intermediate—Soy Sauce Transfer.”
  • Zhang’s amusement embarrasses Xiaoyu, who tries to hide the skill. Guan Hongying explains that Xiaoyu concealed her awakening for two years and only used her spatial ability to transfer soy sauce into her bowl, causing the ability to develop in a ridiculous direction.
  • Guan Hongying then confronts Zhang Ping, revealing that she suspects he belongs to the Cleanup Team because she recognizes his scent from Pearl-Watching Peak.

Character Developments

  • Zhang Ping demonstrates compassion, medical competence, and confidence in his healing ability. Despite the grotesque appearance and self-sacrificial cost of Pure-Blood Form, he calmly risks himself to save Guan Hongying.
  • He also shows a playful and curious side when he discovers Xiaoyu’s strange advanced skill, though he quickly realizes that his reaction has hurt or embarrassed her.
  • Guan Hongying remains cautious and suspicious of Zhang Ping, but her willingness to accept his treatment shows that she can recognize genuine kindness. She also reveals guilt over neglecting Xiaoyu’s training.
  • Zhong Xiaoyu becomes more impressed and emotionally drawn to Zhang Ping after witnessing his healing. Her childish embarrassment over “Soy Sauce Transfer” exposes her insecurity and lack of proper training.
  • Guan Hongying’s protective behavior toward Xiaoyu is highlighted when she shields the girl while questioning Zhang Ping.

Significant Themes

  • Trust and suspicion: Guan Hongying must decide whether to trust a stranger who may be connected to a hostile or secretive organization.
  • Self-sacrifice and altruism: Zhang Ping’s Pure-Blood healing ability consumes part of his own body, emphasizing the personal cost of saving others.
  • Potential versus development: Xiaoyu possesses an exceptionally powerful spatial ability, but neglect and avoidance caused it to develop into a uselessly narrow skill.
  • Responsibility in mentorship: Guan Hongying feels responsible for Xiaoyu’s wasted potential because she failed to guide her properly.
  • Humor amid danger: The absurd “Soy Sauce Transfer” ability provides comic relief after the serious injury and healing sequence.

Character Interactions

  • Zhang Ping and Guan Hongying begin with mutual distrust, but his successful treatment creates a temporary bond and earns her gratitude.
  • Zhang Ping reassures Zhong Xiaoyu during the healing process, causing her admiration and possible romantic interest.
  • Zhang’s curiosity about Xiaoyu’s skill unintentionally embarrasses her, while Guan Hongying bluntly explains the story behind it.
  • The chapter ends with Guan Hongying shifting from gratitude to interrogation, asking Zhang Ping whether he is part of the Cleanup Team and setting up a more serious confrontation.

Ch. 87Can Everyone Truly Be Equal?

Chapter Summary: “Can Everyone Truly Be Equal?”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Zhang Ping realizes that Zhong Xiaoyu and Guan Hongying are probably subordinates of Li Aoxue, whom the Cleanup Team considers an enemy.
  • Although aware of their allegiance, Zhang does not regret saving the two injured women. His commitment to helping people remains unchanged.
  • Rather than fight them, Zhang questions Guan Hongying about Li Aoxue’s goals. Guan explains that Li wants to unite humanity, rebuild the empire, and become the next Human King.
  • Zhang challenges the idea that Li Aoxue should rule simply because she is considered “qualified.” He argues that conquering cities and replacing their rulers would not create meaningful political or social change.
  • Guan claims that Mingzhu City’s ordinary citizens suffer under the current system and that Li promises equality for all, better opportunities, and liberation from poverty and exploitation.
  • Zhang acknowledges that such promises would appeal strongly to ordinary people, especially those with no hope or freedom. However, he argues that true equality between Awakened and ordinary humans is impossible because Awakened possess overwhelming advantages in strength, ability, stamina, and survival.
  • Using a footrace analogy, Zhang points out that an Awakened person and an ordinary person cannot compete fairly: allowing the ordinary person a head start would favor them, while a normal race would be unwinnable for them.
  • He concludes that “equality for all” is likely an impossible promise used to gain popular support. Guan defensively suggests that Li Aoxue may have a future solution, but Zhang dismisses the argument as speculation.
  • Zhang ends the discussion by saying he has one important question and asks Guan to answer honestly, leaving the chapter on a cliffhanger.

Character Developments

  • Zhang Ping: Demonstrates compassion, independence, and political awareness. He refuses to abandon people he has saved simply because they belong to an opposing faction. He also reveals skepticism toward revolutionary slogans and recognizes the practical limitations of equality in a world divided between Awakened and ordinary people.
  • Guan Hongying: Shows strong loyalty to Li Aoxue and sincere belief in her revolutionary vision. She is initially confident when defending the promise of equality, but Zhang’s reasoning exposes weaknesses in her understanding of how such equality could actually be achieved.
  • Zhong Xiaoyu: Remains mostly silent in this passage but is important as another suspected subordinate of Li Aoxue and as one of the people Zhang has chosen to protect.
  • Li Aoxue: Does not appear directly, but her ideology and ambition dominate the conversation. She is portrayed as both a potential unifier of humanity and someone who may be manipulating the suffering of ordinary people for political support.
  • Situ Shibai: Attempts to intervene through Zhang’s bracelet, but Zhang stops him, choosing to handle the discussion himself.

Significant Themes

  • Equality versus inequality: The chapter questions whether equality is possible when people possess fundamentally unequal abilities and social positions.
  • Revolution and political legitimacy: Zhang distinguishes between genuinely transforming society and merely replacing one ruling faction with another.
  • Idealism versus practicality: Li Aoxue’s vision offers hope, but Zhang questions whether her promises have any realistic implementation.
  • Manipulation through hope: The promise of equality may be emotionally powerful while remaining impossible to fulfill, making it potentially deceptive.
  • Moral consistency: Zhang refuses to kill or betray people he has saved, even when they may eventually become his enemies.
  • Class conflict: The contrast between Awakened and ordinary humans reflects broader tensions between privileged rulers and exploited common people.

Character Interactions

  • Zhang and Guan engage in a tense ideological debate rather than a physical confrontation.
  • Guan tries to persuade Zhang to support Li Aoxue and may even be considering him as a potential covert ally within the Cleanup Team.
  • Zhang challenges Guan’s assumptions with questions about governance, social justice, and the practical meaning of equality.
  • Their discussion reveals that both care about humanity’s future, but they differ sharply: Guan trusts Li Aoxue’s vision, while Zhang demands concrete answers about how it would work.

Ch. 88Big dreams and small goals

Key events

  • Zhang Ping asks Guan Hongying whether Li Aoxue could have cruelly killed innocent people. Guan denies it, but takes Liu Sishan’s account seriously and suggests someone may have impersonated Li Aoxue. She promises to investigate and report back if they meet again.
  • Zhang Ping accepts that Guan cannot confirm what happened because his timeline is vague. He harvests useful materials from the Corpse-Eating Ape.
  • Zhong Xiaoyu thanks Zhang for saving Guan, introduces herself properly, and leaves with Guan. Their exchange is friendly, though Guan remains wary of Zhang.
  • After the women depart, Situ Shibai asks what Zhang would do to unite humanity. Zhang rejects the idea as a burdensome undertaking, saying his dream is simply to explore the world. Before that, he has three personal goals: deal with the Heavenly Foxes, destroy the Beast-Taming Zhu Family, and help Liu Sishan get revenge.
  • Zhang sets off through the forest to find mutated beasts for training. Little Sairon briefly emerges to eat but mostly sleeps in the Storage Contract.

Character developments and interactions

  • Zhang Ping remains cautious about uncertain claims: he trusts Liu Sishan’s story but also senses Guan is sincere, and believes her only partly until evidence emerges. He is content to pursue personal goals rather than lead a movement, while recognizing that understanding—and changing—this world requires strength and knowledge.
  • Guan Hongying shows loyalty to Li Aoxue and confidence in her character, yet takes Zhang’s report seriously enough to investigate.
  • Zhong Xiaoyu expresses gratitude and warmth toward Zhang, while Guan’s distrust prompts them to leave promptly.
  • Situ Shibai probes Zhang’s political ambitions, but Zhang’s modest answer leaves him silent.

Significant themes

  • Truth and uncertainty: Conflicting testimony leaves open whether Li Aoxue acted as described or was impersonated.
  • Power and social order: Zhang believes ideals and arguments carry little weight in a world where the strong dominate the weak.
  • Ambition versus personal freedom: He refuses the grand, thankless task of uniting humanity in favor of travel and achievable personal goals.
  • Humility and self-knowledge: Zhang postpones trying to change the world until he understands its nature, including why Awakened exist.

Ch. 89Moves on all fronts

Key plot points and events

  • Zhu Yuanlong’s group interrogates two adventurers about a girl’s whereabouts. Though the adventurers insist they know nothing, Yuanlong orders them killed and continues the search.
  • Nearby, Zhang Ping defeats a Corpse-Eating Ape. He uses his ability to turn parts of his body into water or Pure Blood, allowing him to dodge in an impossible way and deliver a surprise strike with his scythe. He overhears mention of a girl but decides not to intervene without more information.
  • Liu Sishan and Cheng Xuejie travel through the Endless Mountains and encounter Bai De being pursued by people in black. They ambush and subdue the pursuers.
  • Bai De explains that Zhang Ping was drawn into trouble at Unfinished Park after killing someone who turned out to be a disguised fox. Zhang Ping then went to lure away a swarm of Black Mountain Bow-backed Ants.
  • Worried about Zhang Ping, Liu Sishan decides to accompany Bai De to the meeting point and wait for him. They leave the unconscious attackers behind.

Character developments and interactions

  • Zhang Ping demonstrates growing combat ingenuity, successfully applying his unusual body-transforming abilities in battle. He remains cautious about getting involved in a suspicious search.
  • Liu Sishan acts decisively to rescue Bai De but restrains herself from killing the attackers before learning what happened. Once she hears Zhang Ping is in danger, she chooses to wait for him.
  • Bai De reveals that he had been deliberately tiring out his pursuers rather than simply fleeing. He recognizes Liu Sishan and Cheng Xuejie as people connected to Zhang Ping.
  • Cheng Xuejie supports Liu Sishan’s intervention and helps secure the captives.
  • Zhang Ping is not present with Liu Sishan and Bai De, but his choices drive their concern and actions.

Significant themes

  • Adaptability and resourcefulness: Zhang Ping turns his strange abilities into practical combat techniques, while Bai De uses strategy to manage a stronger group of pursuers.
  • Caution and moral judgment: Liu Sishan avoids killing people before understanding the facts, while Zhang Ping likewise declines to act on overheard information alone.
  • Interdependence in the wilderness: The account of mutated plants and beasts shows how death, habitat, and survival are linked in the Endless Mountains.
  • Loyalty and concern: Liu Sishan’s decision to wait for Zhang Ping reflects the bonds forming among his allies.

Ch. 90Rotten Godbird

Chapter Summary: “Rotten Godbird”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Zhu Yuanlong travels through the jungle with Zhu Hongfang and several of her followers in search of Chen Juntaing.
  • Zhu Hongfang uses her ability, Human Insight, to detect humans, read lies, and understand people’s personalities well enough to influence them. Zhu Yuanlong distrusts her and suspects she may be manipulating him.
  • They discover a strong smell of decay and signs of a long-prepared underground ritual site. Zhu Yuanlong identifies it as possibly connected to a Ten-Thousand Corpse Pit and warns that a taboo ritual is taking place.
  • Despite his concerns, Zhu Hongfang persuades him to investigate, suggesting that their missing target might already be dead or rotting.
  • They find and enter a hidden underground chamber. After a long descent, they reach a vast hall containing a gigantic skeleton surrounded by corpses.
  • Zhu Yuanlong recognizes the remains as those of a Sun Godbird, a powerful Mutated Beast associated with the Zhu Family’s legendary ancestor, Zhu Chiyang.
  • Zhu Hongfang reveals that the skeleton is not the exact Sun Godbird once possessed by Zhu Chiyang, but that its bone marrow still contains residual power. Her faction has used a Life-Tempering Ritual to preserve it.
  • Several elite young Zhu Family members emerge, revealing that Zhu Hongfang has assembled a faction of talented heirs.
  • Zhu Yuanlong realizes that the group is plotting to remove the Zhu Family’s current leadership and replace it with more capable members. The chapter ends as he demands to know how they intend to use the Sun Godbird’s remains.

Character Developments

  • Zhu Yuanlong is shown to be highly suspicious, cautious, and confident in his own abilities. Although he supports the Zhu Family’s return to power, he opposes the use of cruel taboo rituals and dislikes the family’s corrupt traditions.
  • His awareness grows throughout the chapter: he first suspects Zhu Hongfang’s motives, then realizes that the expedition is likely a trap or part of a political scheme directed against the Zhu Family leadership.
  • Zhu Hongfang demonstrates her calm, manipulative, and politically ambitious nature. She uses persuasion rather than openly forcing Zhu Yuanlong to follow her and deliberately conceals the true purpose of the journey until they reach the ritual chamber.
  • She reveals herself as the leader of a faction of younger Zhu Family geniuses seeking to overthrow the older generation.
  • The unnamed young Zhu Family members are established as powerful, respected talents who support Zhu Hongfang’s planned internal coup.

Significant Themes

  • Power and political succession: The central conflict involves whether the Zhu Family should remain under its ineffective older leaders or pass into the hands of younger, more capable talents.
  • Tradition versus reform: Zhu Yuanlong values the Zhu Family’s authority but rejects its past reliance on forbidden and cruel methods. The younger faction seeks change, though their methods may be equally dangerous.
  • Manipulation and trust: Zhu Hongfang’s ability and behavior make it difficult for Zhu Yuanlong to determine whether his choices are truly his own.
  • Corruption and decay: The rotting environment, corpses, and decaying Sun Godbird symbolize the moral deterioration of the Zhu Family and the destructive methods being used to restore its power.
  • Legacy and inherited power: The Sun Godbird’s remains connect the present conflict to Zhu Chiyang’s legendary authority, suggesting that the faction intends to exploit the Zhu Family’s sacred heritage.

Character Interactions

  • Zhu Yuanlong repeatedly challenges Zhu Hongfang, warning her not to use her ability on him and questioning her motives.
  • Zhu Hongfang responds with teasing confidence, subtly steering him forward while maintaining the appearance of cooperation.
  • Their tense relationship reflects both familial ties and deep mutual distrust.
  • After discovering the Sun Godbird skeleton, Zhu Yuanlong confronts Zhu Hongfang physically and demands an explanation.
  • Zhu Hongfang presents her faction’s political goal as a justified replacement of incompetent elders rather than a coup, while Zhu Yuanlong immediately recognizes it as an attempt to seize power.

Ch. 91Earthquake

Key plot points and events

  • Zhu Hongfang approaches Zhu Yuanlong with a plan to use him as a vessel for the Sun Godbird’s remaining power. He is tempted, since he may be the only young Zhu capable of containing it.
  • Zhang Ping returns to Base 08 with Liu Sishan, Feng Laixian, and the others. Cheng Xuejie explains that Lu Han was worried about him and sent them to look for him.
  • Zhang Ping and Zhang Shouzhong joke together and discuss Shouzhong’s Fat Energy, which can return safely even after long-distance teleportation. Zhang Ping asks to borrow more for protection.
  • The group is preparing to visit ancient human ruins hidden in the Investigation Team’s Training Grounds. Zhang Ping hopes to find a weapon capable of harming a King-Level enemy, since Mingzhu City’s survival may depend on him.
  • That night, Zhang Ping cares for Little Sairon and feeds him roasted meat. The next morning, he gives the creature a Contract Gem and sets a limit of one each morning and night.
  • As Zhang Ping leaves for breakfast, Base 08 is hit by a powerful tremor followed by an aftershock.

Character developments and interactions

  • Zhang Ping’s resentment toward Lu Han softens when he learns that Lu Han’s strictness comes from genuine concern. Zhang also reveals how heavily he feels the responsibility of saving Mingzhu City.
  • Zhang and Zhang Shouzhong build an easy friendship, mixing teasing with practical trust; Shouzhong willingly offers help and believes Zhang Ping can save the city.
  • Zhang shows tenderness toward Little Sairon, caring for and feeding him while managing his growing appetite for Contract Gems.
  • Zhu Yuanlong’s interest in Zhu Hongfang’s proposal reveals his ambition and awareness that he has a rare ability others in the family lack.

Significant themes

  • Burden and duty: Zhang Ping is willing to risk his life, but fears failing the people who depend on him.
  • Trust and support: Friends and mentors look out for Zhang Ping, and practical cooperation helps ease his isolation.
  • Power and its cost: Zhu Yuanlong is asked to bear the Sun Godbird’s residual power, while Zhang Ping seeks a weapon strong enough to face a King-Level threat.
  • Care and growth: Zhang Ping’s nurturing relationship with Little Sairon contrasts with the dangers gathering around the base.

Ch. 92The collapsing tunnel

Plot and events

  • A violent, unnatural quake tears open Base 08’s wall, releasing magma streaked with purplish-red lightning. Feng Laixian suspects a powerful Mutated Beast is causing the disaster.
  • Zhang Ping and the others flee through passages that are collapsing and narrowing around them. He uses nether mist to lift the group and speed them to the exit formation.
  • The formation takes five minutes to activate, while magma, toxic smoke, and the collapsing tunnel threaten them. Zhang Shouzhong tries to brace the passage with pillars formed from his fat, but they begin to buckle.
  • Situ Shibai explains that Base 08 lies 1,800 meters underground, making escape by digging impractical. Ye Changchun offers to hold the area for the five minutes needed.
  • Ye emerges as an enormous treant, driving roots into the surrounding walls to support the tunnel and blowing the smoke and magma back. His strength impresses Feng and astonishes the others.
  • When the formation is ready, Liu Sishan organizes the group to leave in threes. Zhang Ping stays behind with Ye until everyone else has escaped, knowing the space will collapse soon after Ye departs.

Character developments and interactions

  • Zhang Ping acts decisively, using his limited nether mist to protect and transport the group. He also puts others’ safety before his own by refusing to leave ahead of Ye and the rest.
  • Ye Changchun demonstrates overwhelming strength and loyalty by risking himself to hold the tunnel. Zhang Ping treats him as a trusted comrade, not a summoned beast.
  • Zhang Shouzhong tries to help by supporting the passage, then openly envies Zhang Ping’s bond with Ye. He trades playful barbs with Cheng Xuejie.
  • Feng Laixian assesses the danger and recognizes how far Ye’s abilities exceed his own.
  • Liu Sishan remains focused on activating and managing the evacuation.

Themes

  • Teamwork and sacrifice: Everyone contributes what they can, and Zhang Ping stays behind rather than abandon Ye.
  • Loyalty and chosen comradeship: Ye joins the effort to save Mingzhu City by choice, and Zhang Ping’s response reflects their mutual trust.
  • Power and the forces of nature: Even the group’s abilities struggle against the scale of the disaster, while Ye’s intervention offers only a brief reprieve.
  • Tension relieved by camaraderie: Zhang Shouzhong and Cheng Xuejie’s teasing provides a light moment amid the life-threatening crisis.

Ch. 93Why They Were Trapped

Chapter Summary: “Why They Were Trapped”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • The group prepares to escape the collapsing underground area through a teleportation array. Liu Sishan and Zhang Shouzhong stay behind until the others have evacuated.
  • Just before leaving, Zhang Ping remembers that the enemy brothers, Zhao Yanlong and Zhao Yanhu, are still imprisoned in the confinement room.
  • Despite Zhang Shouzhong’s argument that the brothers deserve to die, Zhang Ping returns to rescue them. Liu Sishan offers to accompany him, but he insists she leave for her own safety.
  • Zhang Ping transforms into his Pure Water Body, reaches the confinement room, and finds both brothers alive but badly injured. He carries them out while using Nether Mist to move quickly.
  • He successfully brings them back to the teleportation array, but when Ye Changchun leaves and returns to the Storage Contract, the space loses its stabilizing support.
  • The teleportation platform cracks apart just as the array activates, causing the teleportation to fail. The entire area collapses around Zhang Ping and the brothers.
  • Zhang Ping holds up the falling stone with immense effort, preventing the brothers from being crushed. Lava begins seeping into the area, the air grows thinner, and their situation becomes increasingly hopeless.
  • Ye Changchun cannot emerge from the Storage Contract because doing so would crush the already-injured brothers. Zhang Ping can survive by transforming into water, but Zhao Yanlong and Zhao Yanhu cannot.
  • The brothers realize that they are the true reason Zhang Ping remains trapped. Zhao Yanhu asks him to stop struggling and let them die, while Zhao Yanlong silently accepts their apparent fate.

Character Developments

  • Zhang Ping demonstrates his defining compassion and sense of responsibility. Although the brothers are enemies who have caused harm, he cannot abandon them to die trapped underground. His past experiences rescuing people influence his decision, especially his memory of the hope shown by those awaiting rescue.
  • His self-mocking references to being a “Saint Mother” reveal that he is aware others may view his mercy as excessive, but he remains unwilling to betray his principles.
  • Zhang Ping’s rescue attempt also highlights his physical and emotional endurance. Even while severely strained and injured, he continues supporting the collapsing structure rather than saving himself.
  • Liu Sishan shows concern for Zhang Ping and is reluctant to leave him behind, demanding that he return within fifteen minutes or she will come back for him.
  • Zhang Shouzhong remains practical and unsentimental, believing the enemy brothers should be abandoned, but he still helps persuade Liu Sishan to evacuate.
  • Ye Changchun’s trust in Zhang Ping is reinforced. He understands Zhang Ping’s character and respects his willingness to risk himself for others, which is one reason he and Su Qingbo chose to follow him.
  • Zhao Yanlong and Zhao Yanhu are forced to confront Zhang Ping’s unexpected mercy. Their confusion and emotional reactions suggest that his decision affects them deeply, even though they still believe they are doomed.

Significant Themes

  • Compassion versus practicality: Zhang Ping chooses mercy even when it endangers the entire escape effort. The chapter contrasts his humanitarian instincts with Zhang Shouzhong’s pragmatic view that enemies should be left behind.
  • Moral consistency: Zhang Ping’s actions are rooted in his past as a rescuer. He refuses to become someone who ignores people in danger simply because they are enemies.
  • Self-sacrifice and responsibility: Zhang Ping accepts personal danger to protect the brothers, embodying the idea that saving others may require risking one’s own life.
  • The burden of mercy: His compassion becomes the literal reason he is trapped. The chapter questions whether kindness can become destructive when it ignores practical consequences.
  • Redemption through unexpected kindness: Although the brothers are enemies, Zhang Ping’s rescue may begin to change how they view him and themselves.

Character Interactions

  • Liu Sishan and Zhang Ping argue indirectly over whether he should return, with her concern emphasizing their close bond.
  • Zhang Shouzhong supports Zhang Ping’s decision to evacuate Liu Sishan but criticizes the decision to rescue the brothers.
  • Ye Changchun recognizes and validates Zhang Ping’s compassionate nature, quietly supporting his choice.
  • Zhang Ping refuses to engage seriously with the rescued brothers, using sarcasm to deflect Zhao Yanhu’s confusion about why he returned.
  • Trapped beneath the rubble, the brothers urge Zhang Ping to save himself, while Zhang Ping continues protecting them despite their protests.

Ch. 94Emulating the worthy

Chapter summary

Key plot points and events

  • While Zhang Ping remains underground, Liu Sishan and the others wait for him to return. They see a gigantic firebird struggling in the burning forest, amid red clouds, lightning, earthquakes, and an eruption from the volcano where Zhang Ping, Su Qingbo, and Ye Changchun had previously been.
  • The teleportation array has stopped working, trapping Zhang Ping below. The group fears the firebird may be a King-level Mutated Beast and that the spreading lava and forest fire could devastate the region. They consider digging down to reach Zhang Ping, but the eruption leaves little time.
  • Eighteen hundred meters underground, Zhang Ping is pinned beneath crushing rock. He refuses to give up and draws on Old King’s Blood and the Beast King Fist technique Tao Tie’s Unyielding Body, which lets him withstand pain and grow stronger.
  • Zhang Ping begins punching the rock upward, gradually creating more space—but shifting it lets lava seep in and engulf his heels. Despite the pain, he keeps striking.

Character developments and interactions

  • Zhang Ping reveals that he is rescuing Zhao Yanlong and Zhao Yanhu out of a genuine desire to help, not to gain their gratitude or make them summoned beasts. His ideal is “emulating the worthy”: following the examples of heroes and rescuers he admired in his former life. Under extreme pressure, he demonstrates both physical resilience and unwavering moral conviction.
  • Zhao Yanhu tearfully insists that Zhang Ping should leave rather than risk himself. Zhao Yanlong, shaken by Zhang Ping’s sacrifice, offers to provide any information Zhang wants if he will stop. Their resistance gives way to concern and gratitude.
  • Aboveground, Liu Sishan takes responsibility for checking the array and is distressed when it fails. Lu Han panics and blames the decision to let Zhang Ping act freely; Bai De argues that Zhang Ping may survive the collapse but could be unable to escape. The group’s fear and helplessness grow as the disaster worsens.

Significant themes

  • Selfless rescue: Zhang Ping acts without expecting reward, driven by compassion rather than strategy.
  • Heroism as learned example: The chapter presents moral courage as something passed from one person to another through role models and acts of rescue.
  • Resolve under suffering: Zhang Ping turns pain and danger into fuel for perseverance, even as the lava reaches him.
  • Fate and limited control: The eruption’s timing, the failed teleportation array, and the threat of the firebird leave both rescuers and those aboveground confronting events they cannot control.

Ch. 95Desperate Situation

Chapter Summary: “Desperate Situation”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Zhang Ping succeeds in splitting a roughly two-ton granite boulder, creating a small inverted-V-shaped shelter that protects him and the Zhao brothers from the surrounding lava.
  • His hands are ground down to the bone during the effort, but he ignores the pain because of his determination to rescue Zhao Yanlong and Zhao Yanhu.
  • Zhang Ping explains that he saved them simply because he was capable of doing so, not for personal gain or another ulterior motive.
  • He transforms into Pure Water Form and tries to drill a passage to the surface so fresh air can enter. However, lava seeps into the tunnel, forcing him to retreat and reseal it.
  • He investigates other directions, only to discover that lava appears to surround their shelter. Their escape options are rapidly disappearing.
  • The air inside the shelter becomes increasingly thin, and the Zhao brothers’ condition worsens as the effects of adrenaline fade.
  • Ye Changchun offers to leave the Storage Contract to help, but Zhang Ping refuses because doing so would crush the brothers and likely endanger everyone.
  • Zhao Yanhu, previously hostile toward Zhang Ping, acknowledges his courage and asks Zhang Ping to let Ye Changchun kill them quickly rather than continue risking himself.

Character Developments

  • Zhang Ping demonstrates extraordinary endurance, responsibility, and moral conviction. He believes that saving others does not require a special reason and refuses to abandon the brothers while any possibility of survival remains.
  • His actions reflect his growing maturity: he defines manhood as accepting responsibility rather than pursuing power, competition, or romance.
  • Zhao Yanlong becomes more reflective and recognizes that Zhang Ping’s ability cannot be used freely. Though once resentful, he begins to understand Zhang Ping’s sincerity and accepts the possibility of death calmly.
  • Zhao Yanhu shifts dramatically from hostility and suspicion to admiration. He admits that Zhang Ping is more courageous and responsible than he is, even while attempting to persuade him to stop risking his life.
  • Ye Changchun shows a willingness to sacrifice himself for Zhang Ping, valuing Zhang Ping’s survival above that of the Zhao brothers.

Significant Themes

  • Responsibility and moral courage: Zhang Ping believes people should protect those they have the ability to save, regardless of whether they deserve it or whether there is personal benefit.
  • Self-sacrifice: Zhang Ping endures severe injuries and increasing danger, while Ye Changchun is also prepared to sacrifice himself.
  • Redemption and changing perceptions: The Zhao brothers’ hatred toward Zhang Ping weakens as they witness his genuine efforts to save them.
  • Hope in desperate circumstances: Even when surrounded by lava and running out of air, Zhang Ping refuses to give up as long as a possible solution remains.
  • The meaning of manhood: The chapter explicitly presents adulthood as accepting responsibility and facing danger for others rather than proving oneself through violence or conquest.

Character Interactions

  • Zhang Ping and the Zhao brothers develop a reluctant bond through their shared crisis. His straightforward explanation—“because I could”—deeply affects Zhao Yanhu.
  • Zhang Ping teases Zhao Yanhu by calling Zhao Yanlong smarter, prompting a brief exchange that highlights the brothers’ contrasting personalities.
  • Zhao Yanlong adopts a calm, fatalistic attitude, while Zhao Yanhu remains more emotionally expressive and openly affected by Zhang Ping’s sacrifice.
  • Ye Changchun’s offer to intervene emphasizes the danger Zhang Ping is facing and the trust between Ye and Zhang, but Zhang’s refusal reinforces his determination to save the brothers himself.

Ch. 96Version Update

Plot points and events

  • Trapped in a sulfur-filled environment, Zhao Yanhu is close to death. Zhang Ping switches into his Pure Blood Body and uses his blood to stabilize him, then treats Zhao Yanlong as well.
  • Touching each brother’s blood gives Zhang Ping a fleeting vision of the same red-haired man: first beside a giant Roc, then riding a Firebird. The brothers say they never knew their father; Zhao Yanlong suspects the visions may point to something confidential but does not explain.
  • Wondering whether Zhao Yanhu’s blood might provide a way out of their predicament, Zhang Ping draws some of it and drinks it. He believes his Absolute Command can protect him if Zhao Yanhu’s blood-control ability takes effect.
  • Zhang Ping’s status changes dramatically. He gains Absolute Obedience, King’s Gem, and Intermediate Infinite Contract, including the ability to create weapon, treasure, and storage contracts. He is stunned by the scale of the transformation.

Character developments

  • Zhang Ping remains decisive and willing to take risks. He experiments with Zhao Yanhu’s dangerous blood, relying on his confidence in his own powers, and is astonished by the resulting surge in abilities.
  • Zhao Yanlong shows concern for his brother and caution toward Zhang Ping’s experiment. He also appears to know something about the red-haired man but chooses not to disclose it.
  • Zhao Yanhu is too injured to act, but his blood proves powerful enough to transform Zhang Ping.

Character interactions

  • Zhang Yanlong urges his brother not to give up as Zhao Yanhu fades.
  • Zhang Ping saves both brothers and asks about the red-haired figure revealed in his visions.
  • Zhao Yanlong warns Zhang Ping about drinking Zhao Yanhu’s blood, but Zhang Ping proceeds after explaining his confidence in resisting its control.

Significant themes

  • Risk and ambition: Zhang Ping’s readiness to test dangerous powers reflects both his boldness and the potential cost of pursuing greater strength.
  • Power and dependence: The brothers’ blood can heal, control, and transform, making blood a source of both danger and salvation.
  • Secrets and ancestry: The recurring red-haired figure hints at an unknown connection to the brothers’ family history.
  • Transformation: The chapter’s sudden “version update” underscores how quickly power can reshape Zhang Ping’s abilities and circumstances.

Ch. 97From a king

Key plot points

  • Zhang Ping’s level rises from 10 to 15, and his potential, lifespan, and several abilities improve dramatically. His appraisal skill reaches King-Blood tier, while his body and blood become King-Blood Body and True King’s Blood.
  • His Fire Eater evolves into Flame Eater, allowing him to absorb surrounding heat and restore his stamina. He uses it to cool the room.
  • Zhang Ping tests his new King’s Gem ability. His first gem can explode with land-mine-level force; his second, a key-shaped gem, opens a portal to any location within five kilometers.
  • Suspecting a connection between the brothers’ blood and his upgrades, Zhang Ping reveals that drinking their blood granted him abilities. He identifies himself as Mingzhu City’s second Infinite-Tier Awakened.
  • Zhao Yanlong explains that he and Zhao Yanhu are artificially awakened people from the Sanctuary. Their awakening process is limited by age and has a low success rate.
  • Zhao Yanhu describes the brutal treatment they endured—whipping, needles, cuts, drugs, hypnosis, and finally an injection of dark-red liquid. Zhang Ping suspects the liquid came from a king; Zhao Yanlong admits he has had the same suspicion.

Character developments and interactions

  • Zhang Ping grows more confident as his new powers make him stronger, more versatile, and harder to capture. The Gemstone Gate Key especially gives him a potential escape route.
  • He treats the brothers’ blood-derived gifts with gratitude, but also probes them for answers about their origins.
  • Zhao Yanlong is initially wary and tries to hide information, but eventually opens up under Zhang Ping’s questioning. He confirms that his awakening was less complete than his brother’s.
  • Zhao Yanhu wakes and challenges Zhang Ping’s assumption that artificial awakening is a straightforward opportunity, emphasizing its severe cost.
  • The brothers’ shared history and differing levels of awakening help explain why their identical ability, Saint’s Blood, produced different results in Zhang Ping.

Significant themes

  • Power and sacrifice: Increased abilities come with hidden costs, illustrated by the brothers’ agonizing awakening.
  • Knowledge and suspicion: Zhang Ping’s appraisal powers connect scattered clues, while the brothers’ account raises new questions about the Sanctuary and the source of the blood.
  • Luck, gratitude, and survival: Zhang Ping’s decision to save the brothers leads to major gains, reinforcing his belief that doing good can bring unexpected rewards.

Ch. 98Hongfang's Explanation

Key plot points and events

  • As the forest burns, Liu Sishan, Zhang Shouzhong, Lu Han, and the others flee toward the Changsha River, their only refuge from the spreading fire. Lu Han saves Liu from a falling tree and urges her to stay focused despite her worry for Zhang Ping. Zhang Shouzhong leads the group through the flames.
  • The trapped Firebird thrashes violently, sending waves of fire across the forest.
  • Zhu Yuanlong, fused into the Firebird’s skeleton and badly burned, realizes Zhu Hongfang sabotaged his attempt to take the Sun Godbird’s power. Blind and enraged, he vows revenge.
  • Zhu Hongfang reveals that she deliberately disrupted the ritual with a specially prepared drop of blood. The Sacred Fetus Ritual, which took three years and required immense sacrifice, is meant to make the revived Sun Godbird recognize her as its mother and obey her.
  • Zhu Hongfang explains that the Zhu Family never truly intended to challenge its elders: even a King-Level Mutated Beast could likely be killed with the right equipment. Situ Shibai is far more difficult because he possesses at least 300,000 abilities, including more than 100,000 passive ones. The Moon King’s power appears to counter him, explaining the Zhu Family’s alliance with the Heavenly Fox.
  • As the Sun Godbird begins to revive, its skeleton draws on Zhu Yuanlong’s spinal cord and life force. Though the flames restore his strength, they are consuming his remaining lifespan.

Character developments and interactions

  • Liu Sishan is distracted by fear for Zhang Ping, but accepts Lu Han’s warning and refocuses on surviving.
  • Lu Han acts protectively, saving Liu and keeping the group moving despite his own concern for Zhang Ping.
  • Zhang Shouzhong takes charge of the escape and reassures the group that Zhang Ping may still be alive.
  • Zhu Yuanlong shifts from presumed would-be master of the Sun Godbird to a betrayed, trapped victim, consumed by rage and facing death.
  • Zhu Hongfang is revealed as calculating and manipulative. She explains her plan to the younger members of her group, who question her motives and the elders’ power; she answers with a mixture of confidence, humor, and condescension.

Significant themes

  • Betrayal and ambition: Zhu Yuanlong’s arrogance makes him vulnerable to Zhu Hongfang’s carefully planned deception.
  • Sacrifice and control: Zhu Hongfang’s costly ritual is designed to turn the revived Sun Godbird into a creature under her command.
  • Survival under pressure: The fleeing group must put immediate danger ahead of fear and grief.
  • Power and strategy: Raw strength is not decisive; specialized abilities, equipment, and alliances determine who can defeat whom.

Ch. 99The evil child prodigy

Plot points

  • Zhu Yuanlong’s Tyrant Dragon Body lets him withstand and recover from elemental damage, but recovery beyond its limit consumes his lifespan and strips away his elemental immunity. His charred skin shows he has already passed that limit.
  • As Zhu Yuanlong burns under Zhu Hongfang’s ritual, he recalls a coin given to him by his six-year-old cousin, Zhu Jiuyang. The coin has transformed into a Jester Coin and is embedded in his chest; trying to remove it triggers an eerie, sinister presence.
  • At a Zhu Family base, Jiuyang tells his uncle Zhu Zeming that Zhang Ping will soon die. Jiuyang has made Zhu Yuanlong a pawn in the hunt, promising to spare him if he kills Zhang before ten that night; otherwise, Yuanlong can die. Jiuyang’s deadline is simply his bedtime.
  • Zeming hopes Zhang’s death will let him request a transfer away from the City Lord’s Manor, where he fears returning after witnessing Prince Yue possessed by a Fallen One. He is also under pressure from the elders after several failures, including losing track of Chen Juntaing.
  • Lightning strikes the Jester Coin, and its power spreads through Yuanlong and the Sun Godbird’s skeleton, restoring the bird’s flesh. Yuanlong is absorbed into it, with a jester’s face visibly bulging from its chest.
  • The reborn Sun Godbird lands and turns toward the forest. Zhu Hongfang arrives with other prodigies, hails it as her child, and regards its resurrection with fanatical affection.

Character developments and interactions

  • Zhu Yuanlong shifts from furious resistance to apparent sacrifice, still defying both Hongfang and Jiuyang in his final roar. The coin’s intervention suggests his fate may not be entirely settled.
  • Zhu Jiuyang is revealed as an unsettlingly powerful, callous child who treats death and rescue as parts of a game, while remaining focused on his promised Oceanfolk specimen and bedtime.
  • Zhu Zeming is anxious and self-interested, hoping to use Zhang Ping’s death to escape his failing position; he is uneasy about Jiuyang’s methods and frightened of Prince Yue.
  • Zhu Hongfang sees the resurrected Sun Godbird as her own offspring, despite having sacrificed three children to obtain its blood.

Significant themes

  • Exploitation and sacrifice: Yuanlong and Hongfang’s children are treated as tools for others’ ambitions.
  • Power and its costs: Yuanlong’s healing consumes his lifespan, while the ritual turns him into part of the creature it revives.
  • Uncanny innocence: Jiuyang’s childish concerns contrast sharply with his willingness to arrange someone’s death.
  • Twisted parenthood: Hongfang’s claim of motherhood blurs love, obsession, and possession.

Ch. 100The Sun Godbird Reawakened

Plot points and events

  • The Sun Godbird annihilates Zhu Hongfang and the young Zhu Family talents who accompanied her. A Flame Beast Blood user senses his unavoidable death, but the bird’s dive turns the ground to lava and kills the entire group.
  • From a Zhu Family base, Zhu Jiuyang watches the massacre in a comic book and treats it as entertainment. He looks forward to claiming an Oceanfolk specimen and casually reflects that he cannot ask his deceased mother whether milk will help him grow; her lifelike specimen stands nearby.
  • In the burning Endless Mountains, Zhang Shouzhong, Cheng Xuejie, Lu Han, Feng Laixian, Liu Sishan, and Bai De continue toward the Changsha River. Rain slows the fire but creates thick smoke, which they manage with Zhang’s fat-made gas masks.
  • Smoke and heat announce the Sun Godbird’s approach. Feng Laixian judges that escape is impossible and gives in to despair. Bai De briefly reflects on Zhang Ping, who is trapped underground, while Zhang Shouzhong urges the group to resist.
  • The group combines their abilities to defend themselves: Zhang makes a fire-resistant tent, Lu Han reinforces it, and Liu forms a sphere of water around them. The bird’s heat evaporates the water and destroys the shelter. Lu Han is badly burned, Feng steps forward to shield the others and is severely scorched, and Bai loses an arm trying to help him.
  • The Sun Godbird circles back to attack again. The survivors realize they are unlikely to survive its next dive.

Character developments and interactions

  • Feng Laixian shifts from calm leadership to despair when he recognizes the bird’s overwhelming power, but ultimately puts himself between it and the group.
  • Bai De acts out of loyalty to Feng, rushing to help despite the danger. His affectionate thought of Zhang Ping contrasts with his earlier impulse to curse him.
  • Zhang Shouzhong responds to fear with defiance, using his ability to provide shelter. Liu Sishan takes charge of defense with her water powers, while Lu Han reinforces the shelter at great personal cost.
  • Zhu Jiuyang is revealed as cruel and emotionally detached: he enjoys the deaths of his relatives, speaks crudely about collecting an Oceanfolk specimen, and shows only belated, troubled regret about turning his mother into one.
  • Cheng Xuejie’s teasing of Zhang Shouzhong and Lu Han’s objection to joking briefly show the group’s strained but familiar camaraderie under pressure.

Significant themes

  • The gulf between human ability and overwhelming power: The Sun Godbird makes even skilled fighters’ best defenses nearly useless.
  • Courage and loyalty in the face of death: The group chooses to resist rather than flee, and Feng and Bai risk themselves to protect others.
  • Cruelty and dehumanization: Zhu Jiuyang treats death as entertainment and people as specimens.
  • Destruction and survival: Rain, teamwork, and ingenuity offer only temporary relief against the spreading fire and the bird’s heat.
