A single scale had nearly cost him his life!
At that moment, Martin felt the depth of his own weakness. He had watched that player fight the Demon Spawn the entire time, yet even so, he had not seen the scale flying straight toward him.
It was like an ordinary person facing a gun. Even when it fired straight at them, people often could not see the bullet coming.
An ordinary person had no way to do it. Training would not let them see a bullet in flight. At most, they could learn to watch the shooter's hand and react when the trigger was pulled, but they could not see the bullet's path after it left the gun and then dodge it.
Human reflexes thus set the limits of what people could dodge. What they could not dodge, they could not dodge. Everything had already been decided.
A person could not match a cat's reflexes, any more than a person could match a fish underwater.
But those limits applied only under normal circumstances. Infinite City held infinite possibilities. Human reflexes could surpass the speed of light, humans could breathe underwater, soar through the sky and burrow through the earth. They could become as omnipotent as gods.
Martin jumped into the crater, bent down, and picked up the scale. He studied the fingernail-sized thing in his hand, then closed his fist tightly around it.
He jumped back out and called to the player who was still fighting, "Mister, can I have this scale?"
"Take it. Consider it an apology," the player answered without looking back.
Demon Spawn scales were actually quite valuable. They could be used to make or enhance equipment, and a single scale could sell for at least fifty gold coins in Infinite City.
Martin smiled faintly. "Thanks, Mister.
