Background

Qian Daoliu is the son of Spirit Hall Chief Elder Qian Xichen and the father of Qian Xunji and Qian Xunzong. At the beginning of the story, he is Spirit Hall’s seventy-four-year-old Pope. When Qian Xunji injures the unawakened Qian Xunzong in a spar, Daoliu angrily disciplines his elder son and immediately checks on his younger son’s condition. 1 2

He personally accompanies Qian Xunzong to the Star Dou Great Forest for his first Soul Rings. Although initially cautious about his son exceeding conventional absorption limits, he accepts Qian Xunzong’s reasoning and protects him throughout the hunt. 5 6 8 9 Qian Daoliu later uses his status and strength to protect Qian Xunzong’s claim to a Soul Bone and intimidates Yue Guan and Gui Mei into accepting service under his son. 10

After receiving the Sun-Chasing Divine Fruit from Qian Xunzong, Qian Daoliu’s years-long level-97 bottleneck is removed. He reaches level 98 shortly afterward, though he uses his need for seclusion to shift much of Spirit Hall’s administrative burden onto Qian Xunji. 30 35

When Qian Xunzong proposes unifying the continent, Qian Daoliu initially opposes a direct war because of the civilian cost. He later endorses the brothers’ reconstruction policies, authorizing relief, public works, and anti-corruption measures to secure popular support after the conflict. 81 91 By the time of Qian Xunzong’s return from overseas, he has become the emperor of the Spirit Hall Empire. 168

His wife, Xu Yanqiu, disappeared shortly after giving birth to Qian Xunzong. Daoliu kept her history secret for decades, carrying lasting guilt and grief over her absence. 68 98 After Qian Xunzong finds Xu Yanqiu across the sea, Qian Daoliu publicly welcomes her home and reunites with her after sixteen years of separation. 168 171

Qian Daoliu is a protective and emotionally invested father. He reprimands Qian Xunji for using excessive force against Qian Xunzong, personally supervises Qian Xunzong’s Soul Ring hunt, and intervenes instantly when a Star Luo guard attempts to kill Qian Xunji during a formal duel. 2 5 72

He is cautious in matters of cultivation and war. He initially resists Qian Xunzong’s attempts to absorb over-aged Soul Rings and later hesitates over continental unification because he fears widespread civilian deaths. 5 7 81 However, he can be persuaded by evidence, and once convinced, he commits fully to supporting his family’s plans. 8 91
