The wilds.
Station 16 of the Qiuhe Wang Family.
Zhou Mo led his Subordinate through the torrential rain, following the coordinates on the Ghosthide Map. Only after a long trek did they finally reach the Station.
A few lonely wooden huts stood in the Torrential Rain.
Outside the huts lay a patch of farmland, as well as... an Eerie Fire.
Other than that, there were no City Defenses.
In fact.
Almost no stations in the Wasteland had any City Defenses.
After all, outside the rainy season, strange entities almost never entered Camps on their own. If that rare occurrence did happen, it usually triggered a chain reaction, and a few Defensive Structures would make little difference.
"This guy really was lucky."
Standing outside the Camp, Zhou Mo pounded his thighs to ease the fatigue of the long trek. Looking at the crude Camp before him, he couldn't help remarking, "Not a single Defensive Structure, and he still survived last night."
"Good thing the Station Master came along. Otherwise, he definitely wouldn't make it through tonight."
"Let's go in."
"We can grab something hot to eat, too, before we head back to camp."
Their own Station had fought a brutal battle last night, surviving only because heaven had shown them mercy. Yet this Station didn't even have a city wall. It had made it through on sheer luck.
"Old Chen?"
"Old Chen!"
Zhou Mo walked into the Station, shouting at the top of his lungs. His voice carried through the heavy Rain and into the huts. Normally, barging into a Camp like this was a serious taboo, but he couldn't worry about that now.
If he remembered correctly, this Station's Station Master was called Old Chen.
Yet.
No one answered.
"Sleeping that soundly?"
Zhou Mo frowned slightly and walked up to a wooden hut. After knocking a few times, he pushed the door open hard and called out, "Old Chen, you..."
His voice cut off.
His right foot, which he had been about to plant inside the hut, froze in midair.
Only after a long while.
Only then did he look at the two bodies hanging from the rafters like Cured Meat and sigh with a complicated expression. "Looks like your luck wasn't so good after all, Old Chen..."
The two bodies hanging from the rafters swayed in the wind.
Clearly.
After Eternal Night descended last night, Old Chen and his Subordinate had buckled under the pressure and chosen to end their lives by hanging themselves.
Understandable.
He could completely understand it.
A Camp without any Defensive Structures during Eternal Night in the rainy season was like a lone piece of wood in the middle of the ocean. The raging winds, Torrential Rain, churning waves, and endless horrors beneath the sea brought utter despair—the despair of seeing no hope and knowing the sun would never rise.
No one could withstand that kind of pressure.
The sea was beautiful.
Azure.
But the deep sea at night had no beauty to speak of. Its pitch-black surface, like Eternal Night itself, offered only despair and helplessness.
"..."
After a long silence, Zhou Mo instructed his Subordinate, "Go outside and see if there's anything growing in the farmland. Load anything useful onto that handcart in the corner."
Only then did he step forward to take the bodies down and check their pockets for valuables.
He also stripped off their clothes to take away along with the Hemp Rope.
There were less than four hours left before Eternal Night descended again.
Chen Fan woke up, lifted his blanket, and put on his clothes, which still hadn't dried. After a quick wash with the Rain they had collected, he stood at the wooden door and looked outside. He stretched long and hard, then turned to look at the stove inside.
Even with the Furnace.
The days of relentless Rain left everything terribly damp and cold.
He hadn't slept very comfortably last night. The cold had made him miserable.
His living conditions left something to be desired.
He was alone in the hut. Everyone else was busy outside.
Walking out beyond the City Wall, he saw Crippled Monkey busy burying the corpses of strange entities in the Farmland.
"Young Master."
Crippled Monkey noticed him and jogged over, looking excited. "They're growing beautifully. They should be ripe by tomorrow."
"Mm."
Looking at the seedlings in the Farmland outside the wall, which had already grown half a meter tall, Chen Fan smiled and nodded. "Get back to work."
Tomorrow would be the third day, right on schedule.
That was how long this batch of crops took to mature.
The fresh, earthy scent in the rain cleared his head considerably. He looked down at the three exotic treasures he held, his haul from last night. His next task was to strengthen the Camp again to deal with whatever dangers tonight might bring.
The first exotic treasure.
Was a blueprint.
Like the Building Blueprint for the Watchtower, it was as thin as a cicada's wing.
Except...
The structure depicted on it was extremely crude: nothing but the ghostly image of a copper pipe. It looked like a drainpipe, with no apparent use.
-
"Exotic treasure name": Sealed Copper Pipe. "Exotic treasure grade": White Grade. "Exotic treasure effect": This exotic treasure is a Building Module Blueprint compatible with all structures.
-
"..."
Chen Fan crushed the blueprint in his hand, and the Endless Night Lord Panel in his mind immediately changed. This time, it didn't add another buildable structure. Instead, an entirely new section appeared.
-
"Currently buildable structures..." "Eerie Fire, Arrow Tower, City Wall, Farmland, Wooden Hut, Sacrificial Tower, Watchtower, Beast-Trap Snare." "Currently buildable building modules..." "Copper Pipe."
-
The description of this Building Module Blueprint was also quite brief.
"Copper Pipe": Compatible with all structures. Each meter costs 1 eerie stone to build.
Although he didn't quite understand what that meant.
He knew one thing: practice revealed the truth.
He crushed an eerie stone. As milky-white liquid flowed through the air, the ghostly image of a one-meter-long copper pipe slowly floated into view. He could adjust its width at will, from as narrow as one centimeter to as wide as one meter.
He chose ten centimeters.
The instant the ghostly copper pipe appeared.
Every structure in Camp turned into a ghostly image composed of white lines, just as they had when first being built.
The Eerie Fire, City Wall, Wooden Hut, and the rest all took on this ghostly form.
Yet Crippled Monkey and the others showed no reaction. Clearly, only he could see it.
The scene before him was like...
Like...
His eyes narrowed slightly as he guided the copper pipe toward the Eerie Fire. When the two ghostly structures drew close, they instantly merged and rapidly solidified.
Only then did all of Camp return to normal.
The ghostly images had vanished.
And the Eerie Fire at the center of Camp had changed. Originally, its base had been a bonfire pit made of stones, with cold-white Flame.
Now, however.
A copper pipe rested on the ground, seamlessly integrated with the Eerie Fire's base as though it had always been embedded there. From another angle, he could faintly see cold White Grade Flame flowing back and forth inside the pipe.
"..."
Looking at the sight before him.
Chen Fan froze in place. An almost unbelievable possibility flashed through his eyes. Could it be... could it be...
Without the slightest hesitation.
He immediately spent another twenty eerie stones to build a twenty-meter-long copper pipe!
As the ghostly copper pipe floated in the air, every structure in the camp once again became a ghostly image composed of White Grade lines.
