Background / History

Diana spent more than five thousand years on Themyscira, knowing only its Amazon warriors and no men from the outside world. She is the daughter of Queen Hippolyta and Zeus, making her the last remaining demigod of her age. Although Hippolyta forbade her from sword training, General Antiope secretly trained her from childhood and believed Diana was destined to confront Ares. 315 317 318

In 1916, Diana met Leon Stark after he accidentally arrived on Themyscira. Curious, physically uninhibited, and unfamiliar with outside-world customs, she was immediately fascinated by him and by the existence of men, flight, and other worlds. Upon learning of the world war and poison-gas project, she concluded that Ares was responsible and insisted that humanity had to be protected. 315 317

Leon exposed her heritage as Zeus's daughter and brought Ares to Themyscira. During their battle, Leon used powerful illusions to make Diana believe Antiope, Hippolyta, and the Amazons had died. Diana began a relationship with Leon before he left to seek Superman in the future. Rather than abandon Hippolyta and the Amazons for decades, she remained on Themyscira and waited for Leon to return.
