Ch. 221Small World
Chapter Summary: “Small World”
Key Plot Points and Events
- Several Nifflers escape from Banner’s suitcase during the night and begin stealing valuables from the sorcerers at Kamar-Taj, including Wong’s coin box and other wallets.
- One Niffler steals Tony’s Arc Reactor. Tony retrieves it with a Summoning Charm, dragging the stubborn creature along with it. He then discovers that, despite being annoyed, he enjoys petting the Niffler.
- Wong takes the recovered Niffler back, while Leon uses Psychokinesis to locate and retrieve the final missing Niffler. All the creatures are returned to Banner’s suitcase.
- Leon agrees to help Wong and Mordo create a permanent Small World to serve as both a Magic Academy and a Fantastic Beasts breeding ground.
- Rather than use a temporary Undetectable Extension Charm or waste one of Leon’s enormous World Rings, Leon uses his World Lord abilities. He combines the Space Stone’s energy with his World Power to create a miniature world.
- The Small World is built inside a chamber beneath Kamar-Taj’s library, in a small magical-metal-and-wood structure positioned near the portals to the Three Sanctums.
- Leon expands the world to over a thousand kilometers in diameter, then forms its land, mountains, rivers, streams, and a source of light.
- After half a day, the Small World is complete. Wong, Mordo, Tony, Banner, and the others remain nearby throughout the process, eagerly awaiting the result.
Character Developments
- Leon continues to act as the group’s powerful and practical problem-solver. He resolves the Niffler crisis effortlessly and demonstrates his ability to create a complete world through advanced control of space and World Power.
- Wong is revealed to be both exasperated by the Nifflers’ destructive habits and secretly fond of them. He is also highly enthusiastic about the creation of the Magic Academy and breeding ground.
- Tony reacts with humor and irritation to the Niffler stealing his Arc Reactor, but his willingness to pet the creature shows that he is easily charmed despite his complaints. He also displays competence by using a wand and Summoning Charm.
- Mordo functions as Wong’s partner in planning the new facility and shares Wong’s excitement about the Small World.
- Banner remains connected to the Nifflers through ownership of the suitcase, while the other Kamar-Taj residents suffer the consequences of their escape.
Significant Themes
- Chaos versus order: The escaped Nifflers create disorder throughout Kamar-Taj, contrasting with the carefully planned Small World intended to contain magical creatures and support organized education.
- Creation and power: Leon’s ability to construct an entire world demonstrates the extraordinary nature of the World Lord stage and explores the boundary between magical craftsmanship and cosmic creation.
- Practical innovation: The characters seek a lasting solution rather than relying on temporary charms or oversized existing spaces.
- Humor and affection beneath conflict: The Nifflers cause theft and frustration, but their harmless appearance and affectionate behavior make them difficult to truly dislike.
- Collaboration across worlds: Magical traditions, Fantastic Beasts, Tony’s technology, and Leon’s cosmic abilities are combined to create something new.
Character Interactions
- Wong complains to Leon about the Nifflers, while Leon teases him for being overly stingy and suggests he keep the creatures separate.
- Tony and Leon exchange sarcastic remarks after Tony retrieves the Arc Reactor, with Leon joking that the theft was a “mugging.”
- Leon compares Wong’s contradictory attitude toward the Nifflers to Severus Snape, prompting Wong’s immediate rejection of the comparison.
- Wong and Mordo excitedly lead Leon to the planned construction site and wait anxiously as he works.
- Tony, Banner, Wong, Mordo, and the others remain together outside the chamber, demonstrating their shared curiosity and investment in the new Small World.
