By the time he reached the Rex Carriage Rental Company, Sifa had transformed into a kindly-looking middle-aged gentleman. He glanced at the sign bearing the words "Rex Carriage Rental Company," smiled faintly, and pushed open the door.
The bell above the door rang at once, and a young man wearing a white shirt and black vest came over from the company's reception desk.
"Good afternoon, sir. What service do you require?"
In a hoarse, low voice, Sifa said, "I need to rent a carriage for long-distance travel. I'll need it on Thursday."
The young man wore a polite smile and professionally displayed eight teeth. "Please come over here and have a look. We only have two carriages suitable for long-distance travel. You can choose whichever one you prefer."
He led Sifa to the reception area, had someone bring over a cup of black tea, and took out a photo album, flipping to a certain page.
There were two black-and-white photographs on the page, each showing a different model of carriage.
The upper carriage could be pulled by a single horse. Its cabin was relatively small and seemed capable of seating only one or two people. There was a luggage rack above the cabin where trunks could be placed and secured with ropes, but that would be very troublesome in rainy weather.
The lower carriage had a somewhat larger cabin that could seat four or five people. It required two horses to pull, and although there was no luggage rack on the roof, the young employee explained that there was a hidden compartment beneath the cabin. It could be opened to hold a large amount of luggage.
Sifa asked cautiously, "How large is that hidden compartment?"
