Sifa went to the rail and looked down, but saw nothing. He only saw the waves around the ship suddenly grow larger, as if some heavy object had dropped from within the vessel and stirred up the water.

"What are flywheels?" Edward's voice came from behind him. He wore a white linen shirt paired with beige trousers. If he had not become tanned and roughened over recent days, even in such simple clothing, Edward's air—a blend of poet and painter—would still have made it difficult to associate him with pirates.

"It's a human-powered device." It was Frank, rather than Sifa, who answered. "The Wavebreaker has several enormous flywheel mechanisms beneath its hull. In situations like this, the bottom panels are opened to lower the flywheels into the water. Then people pedal them to make the flywheels turn, allowing them to replace the sails, like a carriage traveling across the sea."

Edward was greatly surprised. "There's actually such a device? How do you know about it? Have you seen one before?"

Frank shook his head and answered irrelevantly, "Just an occupational habit."
