An unreal knock sounded at the door. Sifa sat up wearily and said, "Come in."

A gleaming, polished leather shoe passed through the door and stepped onto the guest room floor. Then the Headless Messenger strode in, dressed in a black tailcoat and white gloves, looking like a butler, except without a head.

The messenger first pressed a hand to its chest and bowed slightly to Sifa, then took an envelope from its pocket and placed it on the nearby table. It made sure to smooth the envelope, even though there wasn't a single crease on it. Only after doing all this did the Headless Messenger step back and stand to one side, as though awaiting Sifa's instructions.

Sifa picked up the envelope, knowing Oswald had sent it through the messenger. Normally, he would have opened it and written a reply, but now he only wanted to sleep. He nodded to the Headless Messenger. "Thank you for your effort. You can go back for now. If I need anything, I'll summon you again."

The impeccably gentlemanly messenger bowed to Sifa again before backing out through the door and disappearing.

Holding the letter, Sifa walked to the bed and threw himself onto it without even taking off his clothes. He soon fell asleep.
