After hearing Alger's request, Klein's first thought was: Has someone replaced Mr. Hanged Man? The Hanged Man he knew had always been cautious. How could he rashly steal something so important from a country's military garrison?
Besides, as far as Klein knew, the Feysac garrison on Sonia Island had at least two demigods, one each from the navy and army. The Church of the God of Combat's new Archbishop could come to their aid at any time, too. If a Sequence 6 and a Sequence 5 tried to steal from them, wouldn't they be walking straight into a trap?
He chose his words carefully. Rather than refuse outright, he asked tactfully, "Is your source reliable?"
If it wasn't certain, they would be better off thinking it through first.
"Reliable! It was mentioned in a mission issued by the Church of Storms!" Alger paused, steadied himself, then added, "I was in a hurry just now. I may not have explained it clearly...
"After the Church discovered that the Feysac Military was keeping an Obninsk Sea Monster, it summoned every privateer captain in its service, myself included, along with members of elite teams who hold no official positions. We're preparing to raid the Feysac Naval Port on Sonia Island and kill the monster.
"What I'm asking is for you to steal the monster while we're fighting Feysac."
So the Church of Storms will keep the Feysac Military occupied... That makes it much less difficult. It might be worth a try.
Right. The Obninsk Sea Monster is crucial to the advancement ritual for Ocean Songster. The Feysac Military is obviously keeping one to raise an Ocean Songster of its own. The Church of Storms, which controls the Sailor Pathway, would never allow that.
*But sending regular forces would be tantamount to declaring war
