Investigator? That word didn't bode well... Abner grumbled to himself, but he did not immediately follow the ugly "bell ringer" into the lighthouse. Instead, he considered what he knew:
In the original story, Klein had accepted a commission from Darkwill, the "Fat Apothecary," and brought him and the Dice of Probability to Oravi Island, where they met Carnot, the "bell ringer."
This bell ringer had a complicated past. He was a product of the Church of the Earth Mother's Human Body Alchemy—one of its less successful products, in fact. He could not even have children.
He later defected to the Life School of Thought and was assigned to ring the bell at Saint Draco Cathedral...
In the original story, Klein had suspected that the Life School of Thought might have some cooperation or connection with the Church of Storms. That would explain why Carnot rang the bell here, and why Ricciardo, a badly wounded councilor of the Life School of Thought, had hidden beneath a bridge near the cathedral.
He didn't seem surprised to see me just now. So what identity has the Labyrinth Tower given me? Someone from the Life School of Thought? Hmm... Then he probably wouldn't call me an investigator. Am I with the Church of Storms?
Carnot noticed that Abner had not followed him and sneered. "What, are the investigators the Church of Storms recruits all this timid? Strictly speaking, this lighthouse is your territory too... You're afraid even on your own turf?"
Good, now I know who I am... But Carnot, as a defector from the Church of the Earth Mother, shouldn't you be a little more polite to someone favored by the Mother Goddess?
After a little more grumbling, Abner found this scene's NPC remarkably lifelike, nothing like the stiff, mechanical ones he had
