Hearing Daly's words, Dunn wrapped an arm around her shoulders. Joy showed on his face, but he looked even more dazed.
When she didn't get the reaction she expected, Daly raised her slender brows. Her bright green eyes swept over Dunn. "Darling, you don't seem surprised?"
As if sensing danger, Dunn finally came back to himself. He searched for the right words before saying hesitantly, "I suddenly 'fell asleep' just now... You know that isn't normal for a Soul Assurer."
"You suddenly fell asleep?" Daly grew serious. She summoned the Dead Spirits standing guard nearby and asked whether anyone else had entered.
After they told her no one had, she asked thoughtfully, "What happened in your dream? Did you learn I was pregnant?"
Dunn nodded. After a moment's hesitation, he said in a strained voice, "I... I heard an Oracle from the Goddess in my dream."
"The Goddess..." Daly's heart jolted, then filled with dread. She had prayed to the Fool in secret, while Dunn had left the Nighthawks after his resurrection. In theory, both of them had turned their backs on the Church of Evernight.
Even so, they still believed in the great Queen of Calamity and Fear.
It took her a long while to realize that the Goddess might not blame them after all. Otherwise, she would not have given Dunn an Oracle.
Daly forced herself to stay calm and took a deep breath. "Are you certain it was an Oracle from the Goddess?"
That mattered.
"There's no mistake!" As a former Nighthawks captain and a Soul Assurer of the Darkness Pathway, Dunn could tell whether it was genuine.
"Did the Goddess give you an order?" Daly grew tense. From what Dunn had said, the Oracle might concern her child.
Was this child not supposed to be born?
