Faced with such an extravagant attack, Johnsen and his three friends had no time to react before each was struck by dozens of Demon-Hunting Bullets.
The strongest of his three friends was only Sequence 7, while the other two were Lower Sequence Beyonders. The bullets tore them apart on the spot.
A layer of green light flared around Johnsen. His Beyonder clothing had sensed mortal danger and automatically formed a barrier.
But the barrier was not powerful enough. It held back the fire serpents formed by the bullets for only a second before they broke through.
That second was enough for him to respond!
Faced with death, Johnsen showed the composure expected of a Mid-Sequence Beyonder. He neither flew into a rage nor froze in panic. Instead, he calmly activated two charms. One formed a shield around him, while the other hardened his skin like steel. At the same time, he solemnly declared to the bullets hurtling toward him:
"God said, they are ineffective!"
Ordinarily, the three layers of defense—including the barrier from his now-ruined clothing—combined with his Notarization that rendered the attack ineffective would have been enough to withstand the concentrated volley. Johnsen could then have calmly identified whoever was behind the ambush, or focused on using another contingency...
But Johnsen quickly realized he was wrong. The bullets tore through the shield, and more than a dozen subsequent rounds struck the same spot, punching through even his Steel Skin!
With a crack, a gemstone ring on Johnsen's finger shattered on its own, and he Flashed three meters away.
Clearly, another life-saving Mystical Item had done its work.
Yet despite escaping injury, Johnsen's face darkened. He had also guessed why his attempt to render the attack ineffective had failed.
