Ch. 41Notes
- Plot and events: Abner, Xio, and Mr. Gaston enter the eighth-floor Dream Labyrinth scenario, set in an isolated mountain villa whose suspension bridge has been cut. A message orders them to identify the murderer, with only one attempt allowed. Inside, they meet eight residents, including a mysterious child named Conan whom Gaston recognizes as a recurring and extremely dangerous detective figure. After hearing that a bandaged stranger attacked Conan’s sister, the group debates whether the stranger is the culprit. Abner, recognizing the scenario from a story he remembers, identifies the apparently fat man as the murderer. He correctly explains that the man has concealed his true body with padding and attacked the girl because she may have seen him changing disguises. The scenario immediately ends, confirming Abner’s answer.
- Character developments: Abner’s familiarity with stories from Roselle’s original world gives him a major advantage and confirms his suspicion that the Dream Labyrinth was created by Emperor Roselle using altered versions of entertainment plots. He becomes increasingly confident that knowledge of these plots may help him clear future floors. Gaston’s fear and frustration toward “Conan” reveal that he has repeatedly failed against this scenario, while Abner’s effortless solution greatly changes his view of Detectives. Xio continues to trust Abner’s unusual abilities and is unsurprised by his success.
- Rewards and developments after the trial: In the Reward Room, Abner receives Ailnos’s Occult Records, which contains mostly familiar ritual knowledge but introduces a method of creating charms by borrowing power from a high-level Beyonder item rather than praying to a god. Abner realizes he may eventually use the Pure White Eye to develop items connected to Sefirah Castle, though he must wait until reaching Sequence 7. Xio receives a biography containing the name of a main ingredient for the Sheriff Potion, giving her an important advancement clue.
- Themes: The chapter emphasizes the value of knowledge, preparation, and narrative familiarity over conventional deduction. It also explores the Dream Labyrinth as a fusion of altered fictional worlds, the risks of limited attempts, and the way occult knowledge can be adapted creatively rather than followed traditionally. Abner’s reluctance to rely on gods contrasts with his practical search for alternative sources of power.
- Character interactions: Gaston warns Abner and Xio about Conan’s abilities and urges caution. Xio proposes watching for the bandaged stranger, while Gaston argues that Conan scenarios are deceptive and that anyone could be guilty. Abner confidently interrupts them, identifies the disguised murderer, and earns Gaston’s astonishment. Later, Abner and Xio compare their rewards, with Abner privately deciding to help her identify the other Sheriff Potion ingredient.
