Background
Around twenty years before the main conflict, Zhong Qiuyue married Chen Zhengchu for the Zhong Family’s interests: the family needed a mature head and an heir. Chen had previously intended to marry Ye Zi, with whom he had a daughter, Ye Qin. After learning of their relationship, Zhong drove Ye Zi and Ye Qin out of Yan City; Ye Zi’s legs were broken during the expulsion. 401 429
Zhong later seized control of the Zhong Family through a bloody internal power struggle. Accounts describe her eliminating more than a hundred people and centralizing authority in herself, leaving the family highly efficient but dependent on her personal control. 405 408 424
She raised her daughter Zhong Ling as her intended successor, training her in calculation, intrigue, and the standards expected of a family heir. This upbringing strongly shaped Zhong Ling’s distorted view of relationships and power. 303
Appearance
Zhong Qiuyue maintains an elegant, controlled presentation suited to her position, often appearing composed even during confrontations.
- Frequently stands with her hands clasped behind her back. 336
- Has slender fingers and is noted for her red lips. 283 346
- Keeps ladies’ cigarettes close at hand; smoking is a recurring habit. 283 290
- Uses calm, deliberate gestures—including handling tea, food, and a fruit knife—to unsettle those around her. 337 346
Personality
Zhong Qiuyue is calculating, domineering, and intensely pragmatic. She treats family ties, business partnerships, and political relationships as instruments for preserving the Zhong Family’s status. Her control over the family is so complete that senior personnel function largely as executors of her orders. 258 408
She remains outwardly calm under pressure and considers emotional displays a weakness. At the same time, this composure conceals deep possessiveness and resentment, especially toward Ye Zi and Ye Qin, whom she views as an enduring humiliation connected to Chen Zhengchu. 346 395
Her need to control every variable also makes her distrustful. When Zhong Ling disappears and Ye Qin returns to Yan City, Zhong increasingly interprets unrelated events as evidence of Chen Zhengchu’s betrayal, allowing suspicion to override her judgment. 400
Abilities & Skills
Business Leadership and Resource Control
Zhong Qiuyue commands the Zhong Family’s enterprises and uses its capital to impose terms on partners and rivals.
- Agreed to support Lin Jiatao’s Youth Lake project only on the condition of a return on her investment. 258
- Publicly secured the Youth Lake project for her future son-in-law, Lin Tianyou, and warned other attendees not to compete for it. 287
- Promised attending business leaders that their companies would double in scale if the Zhong Family survived its conflict with Shen Nanyue. 394
- Her centralized management became a critical weakness after her hospitalization, as the family lacked independent leaders capable of responding to the crisis. 405 452
Political and Psychological Manipulation
Zhong excels at testing loyalty, applying pressure, and forcing others into unfavorable positions.
- Used Lin Jiatao’s immediate reaction to Zhong Ling and Lin Tianyou’s kidnapping to assess whether he had prior knowledge. 381
- Pressured Chen Zhengchu by offering to bear him another child if he killed Ye Zi and Ye Qin, then dismissed the proposal as a joke after frightening him. 346
- Invited Su Rui and Shen Nanyue to Jing Hui’s funeral to probe their intentions regarding Zhong Ling’s kidnapping. 384
- Her suspicion of Chen Zhengchu ultimately contributed to his decision to attack her. 400 401
Intimidation and Command Presence
Her reputation and manner allow her to dominate most social and business settings in Yan City.
- Lin Jiatao compares the impression of her back to Wu Zetian commanding the world. 336
- Guests at her engagement banquet comply with her demand not to challenge Lin Tianyou for the Youth Lake project. 287
- Even longtime rival Shen Nanyue acknowledges that the Zhong Family is stronger than the Shen Family under the saying, “Emperor Zhong and Prince Shen of Yan City.” 284
- This authority weakens once she is incapacitated; collateral branches begin competing for control of the family’s equity and enterprises. 415 452
Relationships
- Chen Zhengchu — Husband and the Zhong Family’s live-in son-in-law. Their marriage is based on family interests rather than affection; Zhong’s control and threats drive Chen into a desperate attempt on her life. 292 346 401 402
- Zhong Ling — Daughter and designated heir. Zhong trained her to inherit the family, but openly states that the Zhong bloodline matters more than Zhong Ling’s individual life. 303 381
- Ye Qin — Chen Zhengchu’s daughter with Ye Zi. Zhong expelled Ye Qin and her mother from Yan City years earlier and later seeks to take them after recognizing Ye Qin. 395 397 429
- Ye Zi — Chen Zhengchu’s former partner and Ye Qin’s mother. Zhong’s past attack left Ye Zi disabled and forced her out of Yan City. 344 429
- Su Rui — Primary adversary in Yan City. Zhong attempts to have him eliminated, but his involvement with Ye Qin and alliance with Shen Nanyue accelerates the Zhong Family’s downfall. 301 336 397 473
- Shen Nanyue — Longstanding rival and head of the Shen Family. Their contest over Yan City and the Youth Lake project develops into open confrontation. 284 287 399
- Lin Jiatao — Business ally subordinated to Zhong’s agenda. She uses him to test or confront Su Rui while retaining direct control of the Youth Lake project. 336 337
- Wei Zhen — Loyal bodyguard. He protects and serves Zhong through the family crisis, remaining at her hospital bedside after the Zhong Family’s collapse. 362 453
- Uncle Chen / Head Guard — Head of the Zhong Family’s guards and a key enforcer of her authority. He acts as interim leader after Zhong is hospitalized. 301 405
Story Role / Major Arcs
Youth Lake Project Conflict
Zhong enters the Youth Lake project as a dominant investor, demanding profit for her support and later reserving the project for Lin Tianyou. Her refusal to yield turns the project into a direct contest with Shen Nanyue and Su Rui. 258 287 290
After Su Rui becomes involved in Yan City, Zhong sends Little Wu and Little Nan to eliminate him, then recruits Lin Jiatao to test him further. Both efforts fail to contain Su Rui’s growing influence. 301 304 336
Zhong Ling’s Kidnapping
When Zhong Ling and Lin Tianyou are kidnapped in France, Zhong reacts with anger and begins investigating Su Rui and Shen Nanyue. She keeps the kidnapping secret while testing potential suspects, though she also declares that she will not allow herself to be threatened by her daughter’s safety. 380 381 384
Her isolation grows when her French contact is killed, leaving her without reliable support overseas. 392
Ye Qin’s Return
Ye Qin’s return to Yan City reopens Zhong’s old grudge against Chen Zhengchu’s former family. Zhong first unsettles Ye Qin during their encounter, then recognizes her at a banquet after hearing her name. 387 395
Zhong vows to take Ye Qin and Ye Zi, escalating the conflict with Su Rui and pushing Chen Zhengchu to openly protect his former daughter. 397 401
Poisoning and the Zhong Family’s Collapse
Chen Zhengchu lures Zhong back by claiming to possess information about Zhong Ling’s kidnapping, then forces her to inhale poison. The Head Guard intervenes, but Zhong is left severely injured and hospitalized. 401 402
With Zhong incapacitated, the family’s centralized structure collapses into a succession struggle. Collateral branches seize nearly half the remaining enterprise equity, while the Zhong Family loses political allies and becomes increasingly isolated. 405 452
