With a bang, Duke Carter slammed into the wall, bounced off, and fell to the floor. Bruised and battered, he scarcely resembled the imperious old man who, only minutes earlier, had been plotting to use a riot by tens of millions of refugees as a "gift" for the new queen.
Now he lay like a dead fish, coughing up blood in fitful mouthfuls.
Bodies littered the floor around him: dukes, marquises, and counts.
