Ch. 41Shichibukai Meeting
Key plot points and events
- At Marineford, five Shichibukai have gathered: Doflamingo, Kuma, Boa Hancock, Mihawk, and Moria. Jinbe is reportedly imprisoned for refusing to join the coming battle, while Blackbeard has yet to arrive.
- Blackbeard’s ship docks with his full crew. Marines are unsettled by the crew’s intimidating and unusual appearance.
- Colonel Nose escorts Teach to the meeting hall, where Teach repeatedly asks him whether he knows various violent-sounding terms, leaving the colonel baffled.
- Inside, the Shichibukai await the meeting: Mihawk and Hancock rest, Kuma reads, Moria eats, and Doflamingo uses his strings to make a Marine fight his comrades.
- Teach mocks Doflamingo. Doflamingo challenges him about betraying Whitebeard, but Teach refuses to explain and conceals his anger at the insult to Whitebeard.
- Vice Admiral Tsuru arrives, warns Doflamingo to stop tormenting the Marine, and announces that Whitebeard commander Thatch will be publicly executed in seven days. Teach reacts with a clenched fist.
Character developments and interactions
- Teach presents himself as jovial and confident, but Doflamingo’s reference to Whitebeard exposes his simmering loyalty and anger. The execution announcement prompts an equally strong reaction.
- Doflamingo provokes Teach but avoids escalating into a fight, apparently wary of his strength. He also submits to Tsuru’s warning, though he laughs it off.
- Tsuru establishes authority over the room with a calm warning and the meeting’s announcement.
- The other Shichibukai are introduced mainly through their contrasting, eccentric behavior and reputations.
Significant themes
- Power and intimidation: The Marines fear the Shichibukai and Teach’s crew before any confrontation begins.
- Conflicting loyalties: Teach is a Shichibukai, yet his reaction suggests unresolved loyalty to Whitebeard.
- Control and authority: Doflamingo casually manipulates a Marine, while Tsuru demonstrates that even powerful pirates can be checked by Marine authority.
- Uneasy alliances: The Shichibukai have been summoned for a shared military purpose, but their rivalries and suspicions are already apparent.
