Background / History

The Ding family sought refuge at Zhen Estate after Ding Songyan was attacked and lost his memories. Liu Yuzhao relied on her family connection to Qin Nuansheng, the favored concubine of Zhen Quanwang, to secure medical assistance and protection. Qin framed the assault as a possible threat against the estate, prompting martial attendant Mr. Yu to report it to Old Master Zhen and investigate the attacker. 4

Nine months before the main conflict, the estate’s copy of the Secret Classic of Mountains and Seas was stolen, apparently by Jia Yushu, the “Nine-Life Thief.” Jia died soon afterward at Potter’s Field, while the stolen classic and his incomplete Mystic Art of Ten Bodies and Hundred Hands became central to the estate’s later investigations. 11 19

After Ding Songyan and Xu Chang’an reported Zhang Rui’s death, Mr. Yu recovered a copy of the Secret Classic and returned it to Zhen Qianfan. The estate continued investigating the Small Boat Gang, suspecting that its rapid expansion concealed backing from a major sect or one of the Twenty-One Evil and Demonic Paths. 11 18

The estate later recruited Ding Songyan as a confidential storyteller for an unnamed “distinguished guest.” This guest was secretly Yan Changqing, an armless and legless prisoner held beneath the estate; he used a mental seed to communicate with and influence Ding Songyan. 19 21 26 50

Estate Grounds and Facilities

• Lotus Pond Courtyard — Residence of Qin Nuansheng and Zhen Quanwang. Ding Songyan visited it to thank them with a copied Buddhist scripture and a protective talisman. 14
• Listening Water Pavilion — A waiting pavilion near an artificial mountain and cascading water, where guests are served tea, cakes, dried meat, and other refreshments. 19
• Riverwave Hall — The estate’s principal reception hall, used for Zhen Qianfan’s negotiations with the True Spirit Sect and Celestial Maiden Sect representatives. It becomes the main battlefield during the assault. 47 49

Leadership and Personnel

• Zhen Qianfan — Old Master of Zhen Estate, a respected Martial Grandmaster and Supreme Elder of the Four Waters Gang. He possesses four ears and exceptionally sharp hearing. 6 19 47
• Zhen Quanwang — Zhen Qianfan’s son. He is Qin Nuansheng’s husband and manages lesser estate affairs, but remains subordinate to his father. 14 49
• Qin Nuansheng — Favored concubine of Zhen Quanwang and Liu Yuzhao’s cousin. Her position allows the Ding family to obtain the estate’s help. 4 14

Security and Secret Operations

Zhen Estate treats information as tightly controlled property. Ding Songyan is blindfolded whenever he is brought to Yan Changqing’s chamber, and the estate initially requires him to keep his storytelling employment secret even from his own family. 19 21

The estate maintains surveillance beyond its grounds. Mr. Yu and other attendants follow Ding Songyan through Dingjiang Prefecture, including near the county yamen and in Beili Ward. 23 26 29

Zhen Qianfan appears to use Yan Changqing as both prisoner and bait. Ding Songyan concludes that the estate expected Yan’s allies to attempt a rescue and intended to track them to the Celestial Emperor’s hidden treasure or the vanished Kunlun Mountain. 47

Relationships

• Four Waters Gang — Zhen Qianfan is its Supreme Elder; the gang’s conflict with the Small Boat Gang becomes a pretext for escalating pressure around the estate. 6 11
