Background / History
Pan belongs to a surviving branch of the ancient Pan lineage, whose cultivation inheritance concerns the stars and the passage of time. The Xiong, Qu, and Pan lineages descend from Ye, born after Li descended into the earth during the severance of heaven and earth. During the Hundred Tribes’ rebellion, powerful masters nearing the ends of their lives attacked these lineages, hoping their manuals contained a means of reaching the Heavenly Realm. The stolen arts held no such secret 71 138.
The surviving Pan family fled south with an incomplete Great Canon of the Stars. Its Twelve Explanations of Time and crucial cultivation methods were lost. The family settled in Eastern Plain Prefecture because the Emperor Xi Sect’s time- and sun-related arts might complement its inheritance, but eventually lacked the means to relocate again 71 142.
Generations failed to repair the inheritance. Family branches dispersed into commerce, government service, medicine, household protection, and martial instruction; some abandoned the ancestral art to join the Emperor Xi Sect. Pan spent three years traveling throughout Great Zhao in search of help before approaching the Xiaoming Sect as his final, all-or-nothing attempt 72 155.
Appearance
Pan has austere, rugged, old-fashioned features, with brows and facial stubble noted during his winter journey 72 145.
- Wears a Carefree Headwrap when first lodging at the Xiaoming Sect 72.
- Later wears a square scholar’s cap and thick winter martial clothing 145.
- Adopts the Xiaoming Sect’s black martial attire while assisting with patrol duties 94.
- Displays unusual physical traits noticeable to fellow travelers, though the passages do not specify their form 144.
Personality
Pan’s strongest commitment is to preserving his family’s martial legacy. He offers its surviving manual to another sect, accepts strict restrictions on access to that sect’s teachings, and vows that his own death would be preferable to the Pan family fading into obscurity. At home, his public reserve gives way to warmth: he praises his siblings’ progress, distributes money, and parts tearfully from his parents 71 142 155 156.
He is courteous, socially attentive, and conscious of others’ opinions. He welcomes Xie Fengchao with praise and keeps group banquets lively, but his desire to maintain valuable connections sometimes pushes him toward risks he would rather avoid. His caution is genuine: when warned that testing the repaired Canon could cause madness, permanent stagnation, or death, he asks for time to consider rather than immediately repeating his earlier vows 94 104 116 156.
By the following year, Pan has clarified his resolve and become noticeably more energetic and hopeful. He remains realistic about the slim chance of becoming a Martial Grandmaster, but insists on trying 177.
Abilities & Skills
Great Canon of the Stars
Pan cultivates his family’s star-based inheritance and uses star-order true qi 71 145.
- The surviving Canon contains Aperture Refinement methods and advanced saber arts 71 72.
- Its ordered celestial principles interest the Xiaoming Sect as a possible supplement to the Celestial Stars Formation 71 72.
- Its missing Four Symbols Organ Dressing methods initially prevent the family from continuing its inherited cultivation path 156.
Sun-Moon Divine Saber
Pan’s martial system centers on saber techniques, supported by footwork, movement techniques, kicks, palm strikes, and punches 73.
- Sun at Its Zenith — opens his demonstration against Ding Songyan 72.
- Setting Sun at the End of the Road — delivers the decisive neck wound to the Xiaoyang after Ding creates an opening 107.
- Uses a whipping kick and supporting movements to escape Ding’s counterattack during their first spar 73.
- Reports improvement after more than a month of drawing inspiration from Xiaoming Sect swordsmanship 103.
Martial-World Experience
Pan contributes practical experience rather than relying solely on his cultivation rank 103 106.
- Surveys terrain and creates a distraction so Zheng Zhuxi can ambush Shen Wanli 106.
- Recognizes prominent martial artists and explains their reputations 94.
- Provides regional knowledge about spouse-selection contests and local religious traditions 145 155.
- Helps operate the sculling oar during the group’s northward river crossing 104.
Equipment / Items
- Saber — his regular weapon; uses a blunted waist saber for his first training-ground spar with Ding 72 103.
- Great Canon of the Stars — retrieves the original from a black-lacquered wooden box in the Pan ancestral hall. His family retains a copy before he hands the original to the Xiaoming Sect 156.
- Lesser Rejuvenation Pill — selected as a possible second opportunity to become a Martial Grandmaster before forty. It makes its user five years younger but removes lifespan gained through cultivation and longevity medicines; no consumption is documented 111.
- 3,000 taels — receives this portion of Tang Du’s bounty for helping maintain Ding’s cover story 155.
Relationships
- Ding Songyan — friend, sparring partner, traveling companion, and principal contributor to the Canon’s restoration. Pan helps conceal Ding’s strength by accepting public credit for Tang Du’s death 78 148 156.
- Tao Wenshu — sect leader who offers him a provisional place, oversees verification of his background, and permits restricted cooperation on restoring his inheritance 78 141 142.
- Zheng Zhuxi — fellow sect member and sparring partner. Pan respects her strength and appreciates her tact when she offers him a dignified way to withdraw from the dangerous northern pursuit 104 149.
- Hu Chengzong — Transmission Elder who supports the repaired Organ Dressing methods presented to Pan 156.
- Xie Fengchao — adventuring companion; joins Pan in the pursuit of the Three Fiends and subsequent bandit-clearing operations 104 123.
- Xing Chang — adventuring companion during the northern expedition and later stronghold-clearing efforts 104 123.
- Pan Changjing and Zou Qionghua — parents. They support his undertaking while fearing that experimental cultivation may kill or permanently injure him 155 156.
- Younger siblings — greet their elder brother affectionately; Pan encourages their training and gives them money before returning to the sect 155 156.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Petitioning the Xiaoming Sect
- Offers the surviving Canon in exchange for a chance to use the Celestial Stars Scripture to repair it, promising not to divulge the sect’s scripture 71.
- Spars with Ding at Tao’s request to test whether the Canon’s saber arts can support the sect’s formation 72 73.
- Accepts a proposed year as guest elder while the sect investigates his identity and history 78.
- After verification, accepts admission without a personal master. He may attend Tao’s lessons, but must work through knowledgeable sect members rather than directly reading the Scripture’s Opening Orifices and Organ Dressing methods 141 142.
Pursuit of the Three Fiends
- Volunteers for the pursuit, then hesitates when it expands into unfamiliar territory north of the river. He ultimately stays, emphasizing the group’s need for superior numbers 103 104.
- Helps eliminate Shen Wanli through a coordinated distraction and kills the Xiaoyang with Ding’s assistance 106 107.
- Supports concealing the Xiaoming Sect’s involvement to prevent retaliation from the Accumulated Evil Path 110.
- Later helps Xie Fengchao and Xing Chang clear two bandit strongholds after the Three Fiends’ removal destabilizes the route 123.
Retrieving and Testing the Canon
- Travels home with Ding to retrieve the ancestral manual. Along the way, takes credit for Ding’s killing of Tang Du, producing a false public reputation for defeating a Third Rank fugitive 144 148 149.
- Ding also uses Pan’s name while investigating Ge Family Village, later explaining the impersonation to him 149 154.
- Seeks his ancestors’ permission to remove the Canon and pledges his life to preserving the family 155.
- Receives newly completed Organ Dressing methods after returning to the mountain. Ding reduces their danger where possible, but warns that testing them could still cause catastrophic cultivation failure 156.
- Eventually undertakes the trials and completes three Organ Dressings. His next stated steps are implanting the Black Tortoise and traveling again to seek the Law Realm; neither breakthrough is documented 177.
