Ch. 21Great Fire Dragon
Key plot points
- Fugaku’s team counters Kurozawa’s Fire Release with water techniques, but the battle destroys the warehouse and its supplies as Sand reinforcements close in.
- Fugaku’s precise, unpredictable kunai throws wound three opponents. Rather than risk getting trapped in a prolonged fight, he orders the team to break through. He uses genjutsu to distract Kurozawa while Hyuga Ning kills the last Chunin, and the group escapes.
- Sand Jonin pursue them faster than the Konoha Chunin can run. Fugaku unleashes five Great Fire Dragons to block their route, then takes a Soldier Pill to cope with the chakra cost. The Sand shinobi stop the attack with an Earth-Style Wall.
- Using rain, darkness, and a changing route for cover, the team meets Yamada Shinji and Aburame Nozawa, whose traps are ready. Fugaku sends a shadow clone toward the traps as a decoy while the eight real shinobi retreat toward Konoha’s forward camp.
- The Sand sensory specialist Morinaka detects the team’s change of direction and reports that eight are heading toward the Land of Fire while one remains ahead—the shadow clone.
Character developments and interactions
- Fugaku demonstrates tactical discipline and leadership: he prioritizes escape over fighting, coordinates the team’s breakthrough, uses a large-scale attack to buy time, and deploys a decoy.
- His Sharingan supports both precise weapons defense and genjutsu; his skill with kunai impresses allies and enemies alike. The effort of consecutive powerful jutsu pushes him to use a Soldier Pill.
- Hyuga Ning contributes essential battlefield awareness with his Byakugan, confirms the identities of the arriving teammates, and helps the escape by killing an enemy Chunin.
- Tongmu and Murakami cooperate to form a water barrier against the weakened fire dragons. Yamada and Nozawa support the retreat with their traps.
Significant themes
- Tactical retreat over pride: Survival depends on avoiding a drawn-out fight, even when Fugaku’s team has the advantage.
- Teamwork and complementary abilities: Sharingan, Byakugan, ninjutsu, traps, and decoys each serve a distinct purpose.
- Caution and deception: Identity checks guard against impersonation, while Fugaku’s clone exploits the enemy’s reliance on sensory tracking.
- The battlefield as an advantage: Rain and darkness obscure the team, but the Sand force’s specialist shows that concealment is never guaranteed.
