Mother Ruan smiled at her, drizzled ketchup over the fries, and handed them to Ruan Mian.
Ruan Mian looked at the bright red ketchup and chose a fry from the edge that had no sauce on it.
Shen Baili noticed.
Father Ruan remembered Ruan Mian's preferences and swapped their fries. "Dad likes these."
Mother Ruan remembered too. "Sorry, Mianmian. Mom forgot you don't like tomatoes."
Ruan Mian saw how carefully they were treating her. She sighed inwardly but let none of it show. "It's okay."
After a moment's thought, she leaned closer and said affectionately, "Then you have to remember next time."
Mother Ruan seemed at a loss when Ruan Mian acted so sweetly toward her. She hesitated for a few seconds, then linked arms with her just as Ruan Mian was about to let go.
"I'll remember," she said solemnly.
Seeing how Shen Wan and Shen Baili got along had made Mother Ruan realize that a relationship between parent and child could not depend on one person's efforts alone.
She owed this daughter too much. Mother Ruan wanted to change.
The mistakes made by both families had been set right. She should not dwell on the past and hurt her child.
Ruan Mian felt a sting in her nose. "Mm!"
She and her parents all needed to look ahead. She had missed the parents who raised her, and she would not blame Father Ruan and Mother Ruan for missing Yu Jinfan. Feelings built over more than ten years could not be severed in an instant. They all needed time to adjust.
Her adoptive parents and biological parents were all good people.
Shen Wan and Shen Baili sensed what was happening, but neither brought it up. Instead, they suggested browsing the nearby mall.
Ruan Mian and her family readily agreed.
