Background and history

Baili’s mother, Shen Wan, remarries Xie Chengyue, head of Haicheng’s powerful Xie family. Baili is wary of their sudden wealth: she had planned to build a business and provide for herself and her mother through her own work 2. After appendix surgery, she learns that she has entered a novel in which she and Shen Wan are cast as villains and meet grim ends. She resolves to protect her mother rather than follow that plot 4.

Her recovered memories identify her previous-life self as Zhou Yu, a girl from a poor family who saw education as her way out.
