"Are you all right?"
"I'm fine. You shielded me, so I only got a few scrapes."
When they fell, Xie Jin had shielded Shen Lantang with his body. After they landed in a tree, he used its branches to help her down first, then lost his strength and fell himself. That was why she had only suffered scrapes, nothing like his blood-soaked injuries.
The sight of him when she woke had terrified her. Afraid to move him carelessly, she had gone looking for water and surveyed their surroundings. Luckily, there was a stream nearby, and she had found some fruit. Fortunately, people in this era didn't use chemical fertilizers, so they could eat it straight from the trees.
"Are you hungry? I picked some wild fruit. I don't think it's poisonous."
She turned and held out the fruit she had laid on a strip of cloth.
"Eat!"
Xie Jin paused, then thanked her with impeccable politeness.
"Thank you."
Shen Lantang's eyes reddened at once. "You were hurt this badly saving me, and you're thanking me?"
She couldn't ignore what he had done for her. Xie Jin had risked himself to save her and cushioned her fall time and again, crashing hard into the rocks until even his trained body was covered in wounds.
But this was no time to dwell on it. Shen Lantang drew a breath and said with determination,
"Those bandits couldn't have killed everyone with us. Someone must have escaped, and they'll come looking for us soon. There's water nearby, and it's autumn, so there's plenty of wild fruit. We won't starve. We'll be rescued!"
Her voice was remarkably firm. Xie Jin had lost count of how many times she had surprised him since he woke. Those were supposed to be his words of comfort to her.
