Ch. 161Grievously Wounded
Plot points and events
- Lin Qing and Lin Siming pursue the Spirit-Devouring Demon Child to a martial arts arena. Lin Siming wounds him severely, but the boy’s body rapidly regenerates.
- Before Lin Siming can finish him, Li Wantao intervenes with explosive arrows. The Demon Child escapes while Lin Siming chases Li, leaving the hunters frustrated but resolved to prepare better next time.
- Back in town, Lin Qing performs another sacrificial rite. In the resulting vision, he sees the Demon Child’s ghostly presence fleeing west. The boy recognizes Lin Qing as a traitor and curses him, sending evil energy into his body.
- Lin Qing suppresses the attack with an Evil-Warding Pill and the Unity Heaven Art, though he suspects fragments of the curse remain inside him.
- The Demon Child has left the Prefectural City, and attacks cease for half a month. The Soul-Calming Office maintains its lockdown and patrols while Lin Qing continues training. A later sacrificial attempt yields no information.
- Just as the city begins to relax, the white-robed Demon Child appears in the road ahead of Lin Qing’s carriage, setting up another confrontation.
Character developments and interactions
- Lin Qing demonstrates greater speed and growing martial prowess, but his attempts to track the Demon Child expose him to a dangerous curse. He responds calmly and keeps training despite the threat.
- Lin Siming proves formidable, badly injuring the Demon Child, but his confidence and aggression are checked by Li Wantao’s intervention. He recognizes that any future hunt must account for Li as well.
- The Spirit-Devouring Demon Child is shown to be both terrifyingly resilient and predatory: he heals from catastrophic injuries and covets Lin Siming’s vitality. He also identifies Lin Qing as a target and tries to kill him remotely.
- Li Wantao acts as the Demon Child’s protector or ally, distracting Lin Siming long enough to secure the escape.
- Qiu Changming voices concern about the dangers of dealing with Evil Spirits and the threat the Demon Child poses to the wider world.
