Ch. 61What Is a Meme?
Plot and events
- Dugu Yan leads the group through the forest until they reach a wall of deadly green miasma. Dugu Bo emerges from it, apparently at one with his poison.
- Ning Wen silently mocks Dugu Bo’s reputation, judging his skill far beneath what a true poison master should be. Dugu Bo senses the insult and is angered, especially as Ning Wen’s thoughts also reinforce his resentment toward Tang San for deceiving and exploiting him.
- Ning Wen’s thoughts then describe a far more powerful kind of “poison”: a meme that spreads through ideas and perception, infecting people without physical contact.
- He gives the example of “All Things Return to Void,” a nihilistic idea that could spread through minds, eventually alter reality, and persuade the world to destroy itself. Only Ning Wen’s bonded divine artifact, the Kunlun Mirror, supposedly saved him from it in a previous life.
- The group is horrified by the account. Ning Wen, realizing that simply hearing the idea might itself be dangerous, becomes alarmed that he may already be infected.
Character developments and interactions
- Dugu Bo shifts from imposing confidence to shock when Ning Wen’s thoughts describe poison on a vastly greater scale. His pride in his expertise is wounded, and his existing anger toward Tang San deepens.
- Ning Wen remains inwardly dismissive and sardonic, but his humor gives way to genuine fear when he considers that the meme could spread through awareness alone.
- Dugu Yan, Xiao Wu, Chen Xin, and Gu Rong are left bewildered, then frightened, as the explanation challenges their understanding of poison and threats.
- Dugu Bo’s encounter with Ning Wen is mostly indirect: he hears the contempt and the alarming account through Ning Wen’s thoughts, while the others react to the same revelations.
Significant themes
- Knowledge as danger: Learning about a threat may itself expose someone to it.
- The limits of power and categories: The meme is neither conventional poison nor a physical attacker, yet it may be more destructive than either.
- Ideas shaping reality: A belief can spread through people and, in the story, ultimately rewrite the world’s laws.
- Pride and humiliation: Dugu Bo’s self-image as a supreme poison master is shaken by a standard far beyond his experience.
