"The Time Machine" was a novella written by the British author H.G. Wells.
It told the story of the Time Traveler, who invented a machine capable of freely racing through the past and future along the dimension of time.
This concept was later widely used in all kinds of science fiction works.

She thought to herself darkly. This lie sounded far too low-level.

She met the man's gaze, as though he were looking at some stupid—bleep—.
"Can you not be so cringe? Do I look like I have a good relationship with you?"
"What the hell are you thinking?"
"A boyfriend isn't a husband. You can't even connect it to the term ex-husband. Of course he dumped you."
"Isn't that a little too cringe?"
