Gaara felt the pain in his face and the humiliation behind it. Rage seized him. His eyes turned bloodshot, and his killing intent nearly spilled over.

"You're fast, I'll give you that." Gaara's voice trembled with anger. He wiped his mouth, his gaze turning deadly. "But can you break through my absolute defense?!"

Before he finished speaking, the sand in the gourd on his back and the grains scattered around him surged toward him like soldiers answering a command. It engulfed him, sealing him inside a huge, solid sphere of sand without a single opening!

The sand sphere gave off an air of invincibility. Inside it, Gaara began forming Hand Seals without pause.

Sasuke stopped and studied the enormous fortress of sand. His expression grew grave for an instant before confidence took over again.

"Absolute defense?" His hands flashed through Hand Seals, moving fast enough to leave afterimages.

A piercing sound rang out, like a thousand birds crying at once. Brilliant blue lightning gathered and compressed in his palm, radiating a pulse of power that set hearts racing.

"Then let's see if it can stop this!"

The Chidori shrieked, lightning blazing! Sasuke became a streak of blue light and drove straight at the towering sphere of sand!

Inside the sphere, Gaara panted hard. His trembling fingers touched his cheek.

Warm liquid seeped from a cut where the Chidori had grazed him. In the faint light filtering through a gap in the sand, he looked at his fingertips. The scarlet stain stung his eyes.

"This warmth... what is it? I... I'm bleeding?"
