Background and History

Hashirama Senju and Madara Uchiha reconciled their clans and helped found Konoha. The Senju and Uchiha were its two principal founding clans 329 514. The village later inherited many sealing techniques from its longtime ally, the fallen Hidden Whirlpool Village 12.

In Konoha's sixtieth year, a vast, intangible screen appeared over the village and began broadcasting accounts of shinobi history and possible futures. The first broadcast revisited the Nine-Tails Incident, which had devastated Konoha twelve years earlier. Hokage Hiruzen Sarutobi ordered civilian evacuation, a level-one alert, and an investigation into the screen 1. Its claims also intensified scrutiny of Konoha's leadership and its treatment of the Uchiha clan 2 36 37.

Government and Defenses

• Hokage: Hiruzen Sarutobi leads the village when the screen first appears. Tsunade subsequently takes office as Fifth Hokage; future scenes show Naruto Uzumaki as Seventh 1 195 177.
• Shinobi forces: Konoha fields ANBU, reconnaissance squads, clan fighters, and other ninja. Root operates under Danzō Shimura's command 1 21 183.
• Village barrier: Its defense mechanism recognizes Naruto as a village member, which he believes explains why stealing the Scroll of Seals did not trigger its highest alert 33.
• Sealing techniques: Konoha's inherited techniques attract foreign delegations seeking trades, as well as spies, after Mahito's soul-altering power becomes known 12.

Major Events

Uchiha tensions

The screen's account of the Uchiha clan's destruction exposes longstanding distrust between the clan and Konoha's leadership. In that account, the clan's anger grows after Shisui's death, while Fugaku urges survival and escape rather than revenge 36 60. Hiruzen comes to question whether his restrained response to Danzō's actions helped make negotiation seem futile 37.

Konoha Crush

Orochimaru's forces attack during the Chunin Exams. Sound and Sand ninja strike as Orochimaru traps Hiruzen; summoned demons and cursed spirits then breach Konoha's defenses 180 182 183. Village ninja fight through the streets while Tsunade deploys Katsuyu to heal the wounded and Jiraiya reinforces the front line 183 184.

After the Sand forces learn that Orochimaru impersonated their Kazekage, they withdraw, allowing Konoha to counterattack 192 193. Hiruzen dies stopping Orochimaru from retaining the Dog Talisman's immortality power. The village holds a large funeral for him 194 195.

Future cooperation

A future Konoha shown by the screen has high-rises, holographic displays, and airborne trams alongside Hokage Rock and an ancient tree planted by Hashirama 133. As Hokage, Naruto supports exchanges between villages and sends Boruto, Sarada, and Mitsuki to Kirigakure, emphasizing friendship over winning matches 423 434.
