Chunks of concrete and lengths of rebar slid off him.

He struggled to rise, but a metallic taste surged up his throat. He spat a mouthful of hot blood, staining the shattered S on his chest red.

Tired.

An exhaustion unlike anything he had ever known swept through every cell of his body.

The solar energy within him had fallen to a dangerously low level during his relentless fight with the monster.

His bones felt ready to come apart. Every breath pulled at his wounds, sending agonizing pain through his body.

He raised his head and looked through the dust at the gray demon rampaging through the ruined city.

Doomsday did not pursue him. Instead, it grabbed a double-decker bus and hurled it like a stone toward a hospital where people were being evacuated.
