Thanos's Throne hovered above a lifeless sea of stars. This massive mothership, as vast as a city on the move, was one of the most feared sights in the universe—a symbol of death and conquest.
Inside the throne room, the light was dim. The air felt as oppressive as the edge of a black hole, where not even light could escape.
Thanos, the Mad Titan, sat motionless on his Throne, forged from meteoric iron and the bones of unknown creatures. He wore neither his signature helmet nor his armor, only plain clothes. He looked more like a philosopher deep in thought than a tyrant who made countless civilizations tremble.
His eyes were nearly closed, as though he were listening to the universe breathe, sensing its eternal laws of balance and entropy.
Then his eyelids twitched.
For an instant, he had sensed a discordant note.
Two lives bound to his soul had abruptly, permanently... fallen silent.
One belonged to his most loyal and sharpest blade, Corvus Glaive. The other had not vanished entirely, but had sunk into a sealed silence stranger than death. It belonged to Corvus Glaive's wife, Proxima Midnight.
Thanos slowly opened his eyes.
What kind of eyes were they? Still as an ancient well, yet seeming to hold the birth and death of a billion stars. Neither anger nor surprise crossed his face. There was only a fathomless calm, as though all he had felt were two fallen leaves drifting into an endless sea.
But below the Throne, the two remaining members of the Black Order—Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian—felt a chill deep in their souls. They had followed Thanos for centuries. They knew that the calmer their master appeared, the fiercer the storm within him raged.
