Ch. 41Rasa?
Plot points and events
- Orochimaru uses Genjutsu to interrogate a Sunagakure Jonin. The Jonin says the Third Kazekage ordered an investigation into a new poisonous plant, based on intelligence brought back by another ninja. Pakura volunteered to lead the mission, bringing six followers into the Land of Rivers to trace the poison and collect samples.
- The Jonin claims his squad confronted Tsukimi’s group on its own, after mistaking their metal fragments for evidence they meant to conceal. He knows nothing about secret deployments within Sunagakure.
- Tsukimi asks whether anything unusual happened when the mission was assigned. The Jonin reveals that Rasa—normally Pakura’s rival—did not compete for it, supposedly because he was occupied with border affairs.
- Tsukimi suspects Rasa engineered the mission to exploit Sunagakure’s factional rivalry, endanger Pakura’s squad, and make Konoha blame Cloud Hidden. He also suspects the nearby Sunagakure observer is connected to the plot.
- Tsukimi signals his suspicions without speaking openly. The team pretends to conclude that Sunagakure is uninvolved and that Cloud Hidden remains the likely culprit, then cleans up and leaves.
- The observer records their staged conclusion and follows them to confirm they are really heading home. Tsukimi sees this through the Shadowkhan’s shared vision and lets the pursuer continue, planning to follow the trail back to its source.
Character developments and interactions
- Tsukimi demonstrates perceptiveness and strategic restraint: he draws out the clue about Rasa, avoids alerting the observer, and turns the tail into a means of finding whoever is behind the scheme.
- Orochimaru conducts the interrogation and cooperates smoothly with Tsukimi’s plan to deceive the watcher.
- The Sunagakure Jonin reveals the mission details under Genjutsu, then is left restrained and unable to resist or take his own life.
- Asuma and Kurenai help maintain the cover story by cleaning the scene and preserving evidence.
- Rasa and Pakura are absent, but their rivalry is central to Tsukimi’s theory: Pakura’s ambition may have made her squad easy to manipulate, while Rasa’s withdrawal from the mission appears suspicious.
Significant themes
- Political manipulation: An official mission can be used as a weapon in internal power struggles.
- Deception and counter-deception: Tsukimi’s group performs a false retreat and false conclusion while the observer believes he is gathering intelligence.
- Suspicion and inference: A pattern of coincidences leads Tsukimi to suspect Rasa, though his role has not yet been proven.
- The cost of factional conflict: The six Sunagakure ninja may have been made expendable in a scheme aimed at Pakura and the investigation.
