Geography and Layout

• Ping’an County is described as Tianjin’s root and the heart of its old city. Its crowded shops and dense alleys are home to people from many trades 1.

• Bell Mountain, outside the city, is said by Master Zhu Xin to occupy a significant position on Tianjin’s Dragon Vein 5.
• The waterways support several wharves. Xun River Wharf is especially valuable to rickshaw pullers because of its passenger traffic and generous tips 13.

Work and Local Power

Tianjin’s prosperity does not extend equally to its workers: Qin Geng observes that foreigners and wealthy residents benefit while poor rickshaw pullers struggle to make a living 6. On the streets and wharves, trade territories and underworld rules can matter more than formal law. Taking fares on another crew’s ground risks violence 1 2 9.

• Cart companies and shantytowns divide work areas. Xu Jin’s Shanty and Ma Village Shack gain a share of Xun River Wharf after driving out rivals from Yi He Shantytown 13.
• Ping’an Cart Company loses its leadership when the Dragon King Society publicly drowns Guan Ershun and four company bosses. Drivers are then ordered to register with the Society-backed Hongsheng Cart Company 27 28.
• The police can be bought off: after gunfire and deaths at Zhu Xin’s courtyard, Abacus Song bribes Captain Zhao to leave without investigating 47.

Dragon Vein and Uncanny Threats

Master Zhu Xin says Tianjin’s Dragon Vein protects the city from evil spirits and is tied to the Great Xin Dynasty’s fortunes. These are his claims, not a guarantee of safety: reports later circulate of a clawed creature attacking boats and paper figures moving at night 5 9 10.

Bell Mountain becomes the focus of a dangerous investigation. Qin Geng’s group encounters supernatural threats there, and Abacus Song later confesses that the Dragon King Society and foreigners are producing Snake Corpses inside the mountain 30 35 49.
