Bzzzz!
Afterward, Mo Bai and the Wanderer boarded a train bound for the research institute suspended in midair.
Mo Bai marveled at the train's power as it traveled smoothly along a vertical track.
There was still so much he didn't know about this world. For a moment, it all left him dazzled.
He had arrived in a strange new world and gained powerful abilities beyond anything he had known. Honestly, Mo Bai felt a little lucky.
Right now, he truly felt like the lucky guy who had won a free ticket to another world.
"Mo Bai."
The Wanderer suddenly called his name aboard the train.
"Hm?" Mo Bai answered without thinking.
But when he turned toward Rover, he found her frowning, as if something was troubling her.
"What's wrong?"
In his experience, the Wanderer was either calm and collected or carried a hint of an unreadable scheme.
She certainly didn't usually look as troubled as she did now.
Then again, Mo Bai remembered that she had seemed troubled by his cursed energy earlier, when she was talking to that Abbu person.
Had his Cursed Energy reminded her of something bad?
"I think I told you about the Threnodians and the concept of their executors."
Her words brought back the explanation she had given him earlier.
Most Threnodians needed time to develop, so they chose executors and placed them among the people.
Whether those executors acted knowingly or not after being chosen, they all ended up as tools for carrying out the Threnodians' plans.
"You think I'm an executor for one of those Threnodians?" Mo Bai pointed at himself.
Then he looked down at his hands.
That Goddess did seem more and more suspicious. Had she deliberately thrown him into this world because the two were connected?
"Sorry. It's just that you really are far too unusual compared with everyone else on Solaris."
The Wanderer recalled the Ten Shadows Technique Mo Bai had used earlier.
His ability wasn't the important part. What mattered was that Mo Bai had no Resonance Mark.
For Resonators, Resonance Marks weren't merely decorative tattoos. They were external organs that helped them regulate external frequencies.
Yet Mo Bai could regulate the frequencies in shadows without the help of a Resonance Mark.
"For now, I don't think I'm one of those executors. At least there aren't any voices in my head whispering at me nonstop."
Mo Bai recalled the traits of Threnodian executors the Wanderer had described. The most obvious was the whispering in their minds, urging them on.
That so-called Goddess had said she was only responsible for dropping people into this world and having him report back to her with stories after he died. She hadn't said anything about controlling his life.
Of course, Mo Bai wasn't about to believe all the Goddess's nonsense after she had stranded him high in the sky and nearly let him fall to his death.
"I'll be staying at the academy. If you have any questions about my abilities or Cursed Energy, ask away. I probably won't be leaving Lahai Luo for a long time."
Mo Bai had figured it out.
Even if that Goddess really did have some grand plan and was using him as a pawn, so be it.
If he really was a pawn, he would just be an ordinary, unimportant one.
And if her plan made him uncomfortable, he could always mess it up.
"All right. I'll get in touch with you later, along with Abu."
A faint smile touched the Wanderer's lips when Mo Bai agreed.
Bzzzz—
The train came to a stop. They had arrived.
Ding~
Just then, the Wanderer's terminal chimed.
The sound struck Mo Bai as oddly familiar, like someone receiving a message.
"It's Lynae," the Wanderer said, glancing at her gourd.
She had probably learned what it contained through frequencies or resonance or something like that. Mo Bai thought it was incredibly convenient.
"She says not to worry. We can just ask one of the seniors around here for directions."
After speaking, the Wanderer looked up and saw Mo Bai making hand signs.
"Oh, I didn't see anyone around, so I was thinking of summoning the Divine Dogs to find the way. Ahem."
Feeling a little awkward, Mo Bai quickly lowered his hands and coughed.
The Wanderer only smiled softly. Then she and Mo Bai approached a senior student who was working on research.
He really did belong at a research institute. As soon as Mo Bai drew near, he heard him muttering about Voidmatter Magnetic Storm data.
Following his directions, Mo Bai and the Wanderer reached a wide-open area that resembled a hall.
Bzzzt—
Just then, Mo Bai and the Wanderer noticed streams of electronic data appearing beneath their feet. Then the projections of many people appeared.
"One day, we'll break through the Sky Sea and return to the cosmos."
"The cafeteria food is great this week. Let's go together..."
"The data's almost ready! Get the students out of here! I'll stay!"
"We failed again."
Voices. Mo Bai and the Wanderer heard so many voices.
Some belonged to teachers, others to students. They all sounded like voices from Lahai Luo's past.
"Please stop resonating with them, or you'll overload."
Beep, beep, beep.
As electronic buttons beeped, a gentle, even voice with a hint of coolness came from nearby.
Mo Bai hadn't resonated deeply with the voices, so he quickly pulled himself free.
But when he glanced at the Wanderer beside him, she seemed far more absorbed than he had been.
Perhaps they differed in how sensitive they were to frequency vibrations. In that respect, the Wanderer was much more sensitive than he was.
With that thought, Mo Bai woke her by vibrating the shadows around her.
Only then did Mo Bai look toward the source of the voice.
The newcomer looked like a young woman with white hair and red eyes, seated on a hovering device.
Her appearance startled Mo Bai. Her legs were transparent, and he could even see what looked like blood vessels inside them.
Were those prosthetics?
But something else about her surprised Mo Bai...
"Don't be nervous..."
The young woman clenched her fists and murmured those words before approaching the Wanderer and Mo Bai.
"May I ask who you are?"
Now fully recovered, the Wanderer looked at Mornye in puzzlement as she approached.
At the Wanderer's question, Mornye's pupils contracted slightly. Then she regained her earlier composure.
"It's nice to meet you. I'm Mornye, a researcher at the institute and a professor at Star Torch Academy."
Mo Bai noticed a trace of a smile on Professor Mornye's face as she introduced herself.
It was nothing like the cool expression she had worn just moments ago.
