Background and History

The Black Shores helped build Star Torch Academy. It draws talented students from across Solaris to study the Tunneler, Void Matter, and ways to resist Threnodians 12 37 261. The Black Shores refers Mo Bai and Rover for enrollment; Rover enters the Label Department as a Candidate, while Mo Bai begins in a preparatory class 6.

Campus life is repeatedly threatened by infiltration and Voidmatter Magnetic Storms. The Remnant Star Society plants agents among students and targets the Academy’s Dark Side, while the New Federation also has covert interests on campus. A Voidworm attack prompts students and staff to defend the school 20 23 37 52 63 189.

After Aleph-1 is defeated and the Tunneler leaves, the Academy loses a vital research subject and faces cuts to its funding. Principal Losera and her students demonstrate a storm-resistant machine and present plans for a transport aircraft to the New Federation and other investors. Their case secures continued funding and saves the Label Department 261 272 284.

Academics and Campus

• Departments: Students are assigned to departments automatically. Ordinary entrants begin in a preparatory class; Candidates can enter the Label Department directly. The Label Development Department trains future Tunnelers and has extensive resources and a demanding timetable 6 25.
• Research facilities: The Academy has a research institute, laboratories, a polar research station, and facilities for studying the Tunneler and Void Matter 9 85 145 169.
• Training: Its Holographic Challenge provides combat simulations and a student leaderboard. Tunneler piloting simulations are also used, though an accident left former student Aemeath unable to interact physically with the world 30 85 98 290.
• Student services: The infirmary employs Doctor Lu Hess and the robotic caregiver N.A.N.A.; the Deep Space Literature Center has an AI named I.R.I.S. The campus also has dormitories, a cafeteria, gardens, and student clubs 4 17 19 85.
• Dark Side: This Sonoro normally admits only Academy students. Negative emotions gather there, making it a target for the Remnant Star Society 189 197.

Administration and Affiliations

• Principal Losera — prioritizes students’ welfare and education while managing the Academy’s research interests, outside pressure, and funding 43 272 273.
• Black Shores — helped build the Academy, referred Mo Bai and Rover for enrollment, and later took part in reviewing its future 6 12 274 282.
• New Federation — an investor whose representatives considered reducing funding after the Tunneler’s departure; its agents have also operated covertly at the Academy 63 252 271 284.
• Remnant Star Society — infiltrated the school and repeatedly used it as a site for covert operations 37 52 189 268.
