In the Realms, dragons were always regarded as prey. Few poems that bards loved reciting in taverns lacked a dragon, and dragons played different roles in different tales of adventure.

In some adventures, dragons existed only as monsters, enemies, and spoils.

In others, dragons were masterminds, schemers, the hidden hands behind the entire adventure.

In some stories, dragons were even the initiators, planners, and sponsors of the adventure. The whole journey began with a dragon's commission or quest.

"How can anyone imagine anything more magnificent than a dragon-the pinnacle of creation?"

-A famous saying of a Great Wyrm Red Dragon

Waterdeep's Lord Blackstaff, Khelben Blackstaff, had met the two legendary force dragons while exploring the Outer Planes. They had crossed paths over a treasure hoard, and that was how the force dragon Faenor had come to know this Chosen of the Goddess of Magic. Although force dragons disliked interacting with mortals, he had shown Blackstaff some respect on account of his patron.

A god was a god, after all. Even a dragon that had absorbed its echoes across multiple universes and truly transformed into an ancient dragon possessed, at best, quasi-divine power. It still stood a tier below a true god, never mind the Goddess of Magic, who controlled the Weave.

Surprisingly, Blackstaff had offered to relinquish all the spoils as a gesture of friendship.

That gesture had suited Faenor's tastes. Combined with Blackstaff's profound understanding of magic, his knowledge from the Goddess of Magic, and his distinguished origins in Myth Drannor of the Cormanthor Empire, it had led the man and dragon to travel together for a short while-meaning several years. When they parted, Faenor and Blackstaff had made a verbal promise to watch out for one another.

That was why the force dragon had brought his daughter here.
