High Ice.
Located north of the Great Desert of Anauroch, High Ice was a desolate land, yet home to quite a few native inhabitants. Snow and ice covered it all year round, and howling winds battered its towering snowy mountains without end, burying every secret beneath the frost.
High Ice was also one of the few places where traces of the giant empire could still be seen. Although only crumbling ruins remained of its glory, and the cloud giants and storm giants at the top of its hierarchy no longer lived there, a small number of frost giants remained. They dwelled among the peaks and glacial crevasses, surviving by herding livestock and raiding other tribes for their animals.
The snow elves' settlements lay hidden on the snowy mountain plateaus of High Ice. Their greatest enemies were the frost giants to the north and a species known as yakfolk to the west. The conflicts between them had continued for many years.
Yakfolk were ogre-sized humanoids. Their heads resembled those of yaks, and coarse fur covered their bodies. Almost half their race were spellcasters. They worshipped a deity called the "Faceless God," who granted them powerful divine magic and mind-control abilities. The price was regular living sacrifices to satisfy the deity's appetite.
This was a dangerous place. Besides their two main enemies, the snow elves had to contend with many other creatures.
Among the chromatic dragons were white dragons. As true dragons, they possessed tremendous power (they simply were not very bright; the snow elves had entire warehouses piled full of white dragon hide, and their celebrations featured white dragon served three ways, or even five).
