Although most layers of the Abyss were realms ruled by demon lords, some were the domains of evil deities.
The Spider Queen Lolth was a demon who had attained divine rank. Her boundless domain was the nexus of countless vile plots throughout the Abyss. By dragging worlds from the Prime Material Plane into the Weave Pits, Lolth tirelessly sought to expand her realm, and every conquest granted the Spider Queen more power.
The Spider Queen coveted the positions of the most powerful deities and sought to seize them through betrayal, deception, and murder.
Countless overlapping stretches of stone flooring formed an endless network-the Weave Pits. Each flawless stone path was twenty feet wide and three feet thick. A detailed inspection of these paths revealed subtle shifts in the stone's natural patterns, constantly forming the twisted bodies and faces of fallen souls. Sticky webs enveloped the paths, forming tubular corridors.
The Spider Queen Lolth sat in her temple, taking in the news arriving from outside.
In appearance, Lolth was an extraordinarily beautiful goddess. Though she had betrayed Corellon, though his curse had turned her into a giant spider, and though she was now an evil goddess who ruled a layer of the Abyss, she remained beautiful. When people heard her name, their first thought was no longer the breathtaking beauty of Araushnee, the Elven Goddess-Queen, but Lolth's spite, depravity, madness, and evil. Yet there was no denying that, as the first wife of Corellon, the Elven God-King, she had been one of the most beautiful goddesses when she was still Araushnee. Even after being cursed, Lolth remained among the loveliest goddesses-and one of the two most beautiful women in the Abyss.
