Unexpectedly, the Emperor and the Lady of Pain became friends. Though they had never exchanged a single word, perhaps something they shared had drawn them to one another. In any case, a mysterious bond had formed between the Master of Mankind and the Lady of Pain.
The Lady of Pain was the ruler and guardian of Sigil. She might have been among the first primordial beings. She had slain Oscar, God of Portals, and countless other lesser gods who had intruded upon Sigil, and had created labyrinths to imprison all manner of beings. So far, three people had escaped.
No one knew where the Lady of Pain came from. She had no residence and no temples, and speculation about her could fill ten libraries. All anyone knew was that she had appeared at some point, brutally slain Oscar, God of Myriad Portals, and taken control of Sigil, the nexus of passages connecting the myriad worlds of the multiverse. Some said she was a Tanar'ri Demon who had come to Sigil to escape the vengeance of the Abyss's will. Others said she was an archmage who had touched the "source," grasped the true nature of the universe, and come to Sigil.
Others claimed that the Lady of Pain had actually hatched from an egg. Some said she was a dragon, some an Elder Evil, and others the reincarnation of a lost deity.
The only certainty was that the Lady of Pain neither needed nor accepted worship. Anyone who tried to praise her would be brutally killed or flayed. She despised all deities, and under her rule, no cleric of a deity, divine being, quasi-deity, or true god was permitted to enter Sigil.
The Lady of Pain never communicated with other beings. The sole exception had been her confrontation with the great
