If not for the Time of Troubles, Kelemvor would have been nothing more than an ordinary mortal warrior, periodically afflicted by the curse of lycanthropy. Perhaps he would have died alone on some battlefield, his death meaningless and unmourned.
Yet a twist of fate had led him to join an adventuring party whose members included Cyric, a thief from Zhentil Keep; a young arcane spellcaster who went by the name "Midnight"; and Aydin, a slacker priest of Sune.
Kelemvor's last memory was of the final battle in Waterdeep, where they had faced Myrkul and his Crown of Horns together. On the brink of victory, Cyric had stabbed him in the back with Godsbane, killing him.
Cyric had finally fulfilled his wish to kill his enemy and romantic rival, but Kelemvor's soul had never fallen into the hands of the King of the Underworld. In fact, Cyric had spent the past ten years using every means at his disposal to find Kelemvor.
Now all the answers were clear. For those ten years, Godsbane, the sword that was Mask's incarnation, had kept Kelemvor hidden right beside Cyric. The King of Lies could never have imagined that Kelemvor had been beside him all along.
At this moment, Kelemvor Lyonsbane was still a mortal. Although the crown of the Underworld had fallen into his hands, he had not ascended to godhood. Before countless horrified eyes, Kelemvor actually swung his fist straight at Cyric.
Some part of Cyric's mind screamed a warning, and he struck out. His left hand broke the makeshift weapon in Kelemvor's hand while his right connected with the ghost's jaw. With a muffled groan of pain, Kelemvor flew backward.
"Seize him!" Cyric screamed wildly. The Prince of Lies pointed a trembling finger at Jergal, ordering the undead of the
