Background and History

Petty comes from an ordinary family and worked part-time copying books to support herself while studying. The work helped her build enough knowledge to earn a place in Olin Academy’s Illusion Demon Forest trial, despite being the weakest member of her group in physical strength. She also applied for an academy-library job, but was passed over despite being qualified because she lacked money and connections; she refused the alternative of offering herself to secure it 31 37 38.

During the forest trial, intensifying illusions overwhelmed Petty’s group. Zheng Yichen stayed with the unconscious students until they recovered. Petty initially mistook him for the dragon from her nightmare, then became fascinated by him. After the group signed a binding confidentiality contract, Zheng Yichen separately proposed an Equal Contract with her. She accepted, gaining the ability to summon him while leaving him free to decline her calls 27 28 29 30.

Petty later helped Zheng Yichen explore human society through his small summoned projection. She protected his identity, handled valuables he gave her, and used the proceeds to improve her living arrangements. At his suggestion, she began training with her friend Kesha for an upcoming academy tournament. Zheng Yichen also made her an early contractor of his Magic Weapon Summoning Tome 32 35 36 40 45.

Personality

Petty is studious and resourceful. She enjoys reading, uses her knowledge to identify unfamiliar items, and carefully checks jewelry for marks that could reveal its origins. At the black market, she refuses an exploitative offer even though the shopkeeper frightens her 35 37 39.

She admires Zheng Yichen but is conscious of the gap between their abilities. Her contract motivates her to grow strong enough to earn his recognition. When the Magic Weapon Summoning Tome becomes available to others, she is disappointed to lose what she thought was a special advantage, then takes heart on discovering that her access is unusually flexible 30 31 48 49.

Abilities and Skills

Summoning

• Didi: Can summon her contracted Half-Rabbit as a projection or in its physical body. By spending extra mana, she can include items Didi carries in a summons 27 37 39.
• Zheng Yichen: Can call forth his projection under their Equal Contract, though he decides whether to answer. Their initial strength disparity makes his projection small and costs Petty nearly all her mana 30 31.
• Limit: Before reaching the first rank, Petty cannot channel a summon’s abilities into herself 40.

Magic Weapon Summoning

• Can summon weapons through her contract with the Magic Weapon Summoning Tome. Her access is not restricted to developing one weapon category, although the strength of any summons still depends on whether she has enough power 45 49.
• The tome’s contract takes one percent of her mana daily, with additional mana required to summon a weapon 45.

Knowledge and Combat Training

• Her reading and book-copying work give her broad knowledge; she recognizes Bonnakane’s long-missing spellbook and identifies marks that make jewelry risky to sell 35 37.
• Begins studying martial techniques with Kesha in preparation for the academy tournament 40 45.

Equipment and Items

• Magic Weapon Summoning Tome contract — grants access to projections of weapons in the tome’s catalogue 45.

Relationships

• Zheng Yichen (“Connor”) — her contracted dragon summon and supporter. She conceals his identity, while he shares resources and magical tools with her and encourages her training 30 32 35 40 45.
