When they climbed the cold stone steps and finally reached the observation platform atop the North Wall's highest tower, their eyes widened.
Behind the rolling Gray Fog, what bore down on them was no scattering of lone Demonic Beasts.
It was a Beast Tide in formation: a pack of Grayback Fanged Wolves.
They were among the most common—and most troublesome—pack-hunting Mutants in the Graymist Defense Zone.
They were large, with hard, gray-rock bone plates covering their backs. They ran fast, too, and knew how to use the Gray Fog to conceal their charge.
Once a wolf pack became a tide, it rarely scattered to probe the defenses. Driven by its Wolf King, it would fix on a weak point and tear straight through.
This wave was nowhere near large enough to blanket the wilderness as the beasts did during Blood Moon Season, but it was no minor raid.
The lords could see that clearly.
Three Third Tier Fanged Wolf Kings, each the size of a warhorse, held the front in a triangular formation.
Behind them, an even larger Gray-Maned She-Wolf made no rush to attack. She paced along the rear, letting out short, low howls now and then to draw the scattered wolves back into formation.
And there were two or three hundred First and Second Tier Grayback Demon Wolves.
Dozens of long, thin shadows streaked low along the flanks as well. Those were Shadowstalker Wolves, bred to leap at walls.
A force of this size was no real threat to Blackpine Fief's current defenses.
But against any of their new territories, it would be enough to rip through an entire stretch of outer wall in the middle of the night. It would be a calamity.
But why had these Magic Beasts appeared here at this exact moment?
