Background
After the Blood Moon’s first large-scale invasion, the Most Holy founded the Most Holy Church and built the first Sacred Flame Furnace. Sacred Flame suppressed the Blood Moon, steadied human minds, and purified the corruption left by slain Demonic Beasts. Altars fueled by Sacred Tallow were later built along the frontier, linking territories into the Eternal Night Wall 165.
The Church separates rare Flame Seeds from the Most Holy Origin Furnace for use in sacred fires. Rekindling an altar requires both a repaired physical structure and a Flame Seed of faith activated through prayer; machinery alone cannot produce the Sacred Flame 18 198.
Appearance
The Sacred Flame burns platinum or white-gold, sometimes appearing nearly transparent. An active altar can project its light across a surrounding domain 18 20.
- Brazier flames cast a platinum halo through Holy Silver runes 18.
- At full activation, an altar can send a pillar of platinum fire skyward 27.
- Blood Moon pressure can cause a flame’s protective halo to contract 66.
Abilities & Uses
Shelter and purification
- Active altars form a protective domain that pushes back Blood Mist and restricts Dark Creatures, allowing settlements, roads, and garrisons to operate within its light 20 198.
- Direct light rapidly destroys low-rank Ghouls and Shadow Creatures. Sacred Flame also burns Gray-Red Blight Threads that hold Borrowed-Shell Abominations together 20 132.
- Blood Moon Season suppresses Sacred Flame nodes. Overdrive can temporarily restore their reach, but consumes fuel that would otherwise sustain them for days 66 256.
Communication
- Sacred Flame Altars emit faint waves. Shien’s Sacred Flame Echo Console uses runes to encode their rhythm into short messages, which receiving crystal plates display as flashes 111 196.
- Relay stations extend the system’s range, but signals can drift between relays and require calibration. The first prototype delivered “northeast” in place of “north” 111 198.
- The consoles later carry Blood Moon Season reports from all twelve Tear Knight defense zones 256.
Weaponized pulses
- Blackpine’s Simplified Method redirects an altar’s overdrive through Holy Silver guide rails toward underground contamination. At Coldwater, a pulse severed Grayblood Threads connecting monsters to their Main Vein, stopping their regeneration; the altar remained standing afterward 165 166 167.
- During the Graymist battle, three modified altars channeled fire underground to break the Blood Clan Noble’s Sourceblood Bridge. The altars were severely damaged in the process 179 180.
- Directional overdrive risks damaging the altar, its shelter field, and connected machinery; it is not an ordinary function of the Sacred Flame 165 166.
Vulnerabilities
- An altar depends on its Flame Seed, fuel, and functioning machinery. Bloodrust once prevented Blackpine’s altar from starting until Victor repaired its mechanism 20 24 27.
- Ghouls jammed and poisoned Kevin Disraeli’s altar machinery with contaminated corpses, extinguishing its flame and leaving the defenders exposed 75.
- Corruption can threaten the flame itself: a Blood Clan ritual caused gray-red films to appear at the edges of three burning Sacred Flames 179.
